PHNOM PENH: The Royal Government of Cambodia is undertaking a massive infrastructure development initiative, with four key projects totaling over $6 billion. This ambitious plan aims to transform the country’s transportation and trade landscape, fostering economic growth and improving connectivity.

Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway

Launched in June 2023 under the leadership of former Prime Minister Hun Sen, the $1.35 billion Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway is a crucial link between the capital and provinces like Kandal, Prey Veng, and Svay Rieng. This highway is expected to significantly boost cross-border trade with Vietnam, stimulating the Cambodian economy.

National Road 1 to Lvea Em Bridge

A vital component of the overall infrastructure development, the bridge connecting National Road 1 to Lvea Em in Kandal province is set to revolutionize transportation in the region. With a budget of over $200 million, this project will replace the ferry system, reducing travel time and improving accessibility for residents of Lvea Em and surrounding areas.

Techo International Airport

Cambodia is poised to enter a new era of aviation with the construction of the Techo International Airport. This $1.5 billion project, scheduled for completion in mid-2025, will enable large-scale flights, connecting Phnom Penh to global destinations. By eliminating the need for transit through neighboring countries, the airport will significantly enhance Cambodia’s connectivity and attract international travelers and businesses.

Funan Techo Canal

Officially inaugurated on August 5, 2024, by Prime Minister Hun Manet, the Funan Techo Canal is a landmark project with a price tag of $1.7 billion. This massive waterway will connect Cambodia’s freshwater ports to deep-sea ports, facilitating trade with regional and international markets. The project is a joint venture between two state-owned Cambodian companies, a local private enterprise, and a Chinese state-owned company (CBRE).

These four infrastructure projects collectively represent a substantial investment in Cambodia’s future. By improving transportation networks, expanding trade opportunities, and enhancing connectivity, the Royal Government aims to position Cambodia as a regional economic hub.

Editor’s opinion:

Cambodia’s ambitious infrastructure overhaul signals a bold bet on the country’s future economic prosperity. By pouring billions of dollars into transportation and trade networks, the government is making a strategic move to transform Cambodia from a regional backwater into a dynamic player on the Southeast Asian stage.

The focus on improving connectivity, both domestic and international, is particularly noteworthy. The new expressway, bridge, airport, and canal are not just infrastructure projects; they are catalysts for growth, promising to attract foreign investment, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life for Cambodians.

The post Cambodia’s Infrastructure Surge: A $6 Billion Investment in the Future first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

According to the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), Japanese precision components manufacturer MinebeaMitsumi is expanding its business in Cambodia through an investment in a new factory located in Pursat province.

This news comes after a courtesy call on H.E. SUN Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the CDC, by Mr. Yoshihisa Kainuma, Chairman/CEO of MinebeaMitsumi.

During the meeting, Mr. Kainuma expressed his gratitude for the CDC’s support in facilitating the company’s expansion project thus far and requested continued assistance with relevant regulations to further streamline MinebeaMitsumi’s operations in Cambodia, particularly within Pursat province.

Minebea Cambodia, a subsidiary of MinebeaMitsumi, has been operating in Cambodia since 2011 and has continuously grown its production line. The company manufactures a wide range of products including ball bearings, fan motors, micro actuators, and LED backlights.

This expansion follows a recent inspection by a high-level Cambodian government delegation on July 8th, 2024, of a proposed location for a special economic zone in Pursat province.

The delegation, led by Heng Soknang, Deputy Secretary General of the Cambodia Investment Board (CIB), included representatives from 13 ministries. The proposed zone, developed by Pursat Special Economic Zone Co., Ltd., is situated on a 140-hectare plot located at kilometer 154 on National Road 5 in Krakor district’s Sna Ansa commune.

Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are designated areas aimed at promoting economic activity. They typically encompass a variety of industrial and related sectors and may include general industrial zones, export processing zones, or a combination of both. Each SEZ is comprised of a production area and may also incorporate a free trade zone, a services area, residential areas, and even tourism zones.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia is set to significantly enhance its transportation infrastructure by completing three major national road projects in 2024 (AKP). This development is expected to boost the economy, improve livelihoods, and facilitate smoother transportation.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has confirmed that the 114-kilometer National Road 71C, connecting Kampong Cham and Tbong Khmum provinces, will be finalized by mid-2024. Construction on this AC/DBST-type road commenced on April 2, 2021.

Currently, the project is in its final stages, including the installation of traffic signs, planting of kilometer markers, and erosion control measures. The road is scheduled for full completion by October 2, 2024, with Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) and Guangzhou Wang An Technical Advisor providing a 24-month maintenance period post-construction.

In addition to National Road 71C, two other national road projects are slated for completion in 2024. National Road 31 will link National Road 3 in Takeo province to the Ton Horn junction in Kampong Trach district, Kampot province.

Meanwhile, National Road 33 will connect Kampong Trach district to Kampot provincial town via Kep province. These roads will serve as vital transportation corridors between Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu, Takeo, and the coastal provinces of Kep and Kampot. Notably, they will also play a crucial role in facilitating freight transport to the Prek Chak International Gate in Kampong Trach district.

These road improvements align with the development of the Funan Techo canal project, which includes several satellite ports, particularly in Angkor Chey, Banteay Meanchey, and a logistics center in Kampong Trach district, Kampot province. The combined infrastructure will enhance the transportation of goods to and from the port.

While these projects are on track for 2024 completion, it’s important to note that new road construction is also planned. For instance, Road 50C, connecting Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Thom provinces, is scheduled to begin construction this year.

The completion of these national road projects in 2024 marks a significant step forward for Cambodia’s transportation sector. By improving connectivity and facilitating the movement of goods and people, these infrastructure developments are expected to drive economic growth and enhance the overall quality of life for Cambodians.

As the country continues to invest in its road network, it is essential to monitor the environmental and social impacts of these projects to ensure sustainable development.

The post Three Major Road Projects Near Completion to Strengthen Cambodia’s Infrastructure first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH: On July 8th, 2024, a high-level delegation from the Cambodian government inspected a proposed location for a special economic zone in Pursat province. The delegation, led by Heng Soknang, Deputy Secretary General of the Cambodia Investment Board (CIB) , consisted of representatives from 13 ministries.

The proposed zone, developed by Pursat Special Economic Zone Co., Ltd., is situated on a 140-hectare plot located at kilometer 154 on National Road 5 in Krakor district’s Sna Ansa commune.

Cambodia’s Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) views this proposal as a sign of investor confidence and a testament to the country’s flourishing socio-economic development under the leadership of the Royal Government.

Cambodia’s investment climate has been particularly strong in the first half of 2024, with total investment reaching a staggering US$3.2 billion and creating an estimated 168,572 new jobs.

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Kampong Thom-Preah Vihear Chamber of Commerce, recently held a business growth sharing program on July 2nd, 2024, at the Kampong Thom Royal Hotel. The event, titled “Investment opportunities in Kampong Thom,” aimed to connect business owners and provide valuable insights for growth.

Over 70 business owners attended the program, gaining valuable knowledge about investment possibilities in Kampong Thom province. The event fostered collaboration and experience exchange, allowing participants to gather fresh ideas for business development.

The program was presided over by His Excellency Chan Dara, Deputy Governor of Kampong Thom Province. Oknha Tan Mony, Vice President of the Kampong Thom-Preah Vihear Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Horm Kim Chheng, Acting Director of the Project Analysis and Encouragement Department, also shared their expertise during the event.

The program received strong backing from the Cambodian entrepreneurial community. Wing Bank (Cambodia), Innovation Investment Association and Development (IDI), and the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and all members of the Kampong Thom-Preah Vihear Chamber of Commerce all generously sponsored the event.

Oknha Tan Mony delivered the closing remarks, expressing his appreciation for the program’s success. He highlighted the opportunity for business owners to gain new knowledge, address challenges, and discover effective solutions from guest speakers. These insights will empower them to propel their businesses towards long-term success.

Kampong Thom: A Fertile Ground for Investment

Kampong Thom boasts immense agricultural potential. According to the Kampong Thom Provincial Administration, the province cultivates rice on a staggering 253,300 hectares, with an average yield of 4 tons per hectare. The province also possesses 30 rice drying mills, each with a capacity of 3 tons per hour.

Kampong Thom’s robust rice production translates to roughly 600,000 tons annually over the past five years. This yield not only fulfills local food requirements but also generates a surplus of approximately 500,000 tons for export.

Kampong Thom benefits from a well-developed transportation network. The province features four major waterways exceeding 1,000 kilometers in total length, along with five key national roads connecting it to five other provinces: National Road 6, National Road 62, National Road 71, National Road 50C, and National Road 60B.

The post Thriving in Kampong Thom: A Sharing Program for Business Success first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has outlined two key principles to guide the future development of Phnom Penh. This said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of twin flyovers at the intersection between Samdech Techo Hun Sen Blvd. and the National Road No. 2, at the border between Phnom Penh capital and Kandal province yesterday.

The first principle focuses on proactive planning, anticipating the city’s needs before they arise. This aligns with the Phnom Penh Master Plan on Land Use 2035, ensuring all development adheres to this long-term vision.

Secondly, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of adapting construction projects to Cambodia’s evolving economic and social landscape. This ensures the city remains functional and meets the changing needs of its residents.

PM Hun Manet also urged the Phnom Penh administration to embrace modern technologies. He highlighted the use of security cameras, solar lights, and automatic irrigation systems in public parks as examples. These advancements contribute to a more attractive, luxurious, and “smart” city, aligning with ASEAN’s vision.

Environmental concerns were addressed as well. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of increasing green spaces to combat rising temperatures and greenhouse gases.

He also emphasized the need for better drainage and flood prevention infrastructure to safeguard Phnom Penh from flooding and increase its resilience to climate change.

Finally, acknowledging the growing number of vehicles in the city, PM Hun Manet encouraged private companies to invest in modern car parking solutions to address this pressing issue.

The post PM Hun Manet Outlines Sustainable Urban Development Plans first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

The construction on National Road No. 10, a key artery linking Battambang, Pursat, and Koh Kong provinces, is nearing completion with over 83% of the project finished as of May 2024. This impressive project also boasts the distinction of featuring Cambodia’s tallest bridge.

The 198.5-kilometer road, stretching from Samlot to Koh Kong via Veal Veng, is being built as a Grade III double-bituminous surface treatment (DBST) road, offering a wider and more durable surface. Initiated in December 2019, the project is on track for completion in June 2025, marking a total construction duration of 66 months.

Mrs. Mithona Phu Thong, Governor of Koh Kong Province, had stated that once this road is built and operational, it will make it easier for people to commute, visitors to visit, and agricultural products to be transported more swiftly and efficiently.

“National Road No. 10, or National Road No. 1551, which runs through Pursat from Samlot district in Battambang province to Khemarak Phoumin district in Koh Kong province, is a vital economic artery for this coastal region,” she explained.

Progress across various aspects of the project is impressive, with road construction exceeding 87%, bridge construction surpassing 91% including significant progress on the record-breaking 530-meter-tall bridge, and the drainage system nearing completion at nearly 99.8% for cross-road drainage and 89.8% for roadside drainage and retaining walls.

While the road is currently accessible, travelers are advised to exercise caution during the rainy season. Some sections are still red gravel and might become slippery in heavy rain.

National Road No. 10 represents a significant leap forward in Cambodia’s infrastructure development. Upon completion, it will provide a smoother, more efficient connection between these provinces, promoting economic activity and regional integration. This vital project not only improves transportation but also sets a new benchmark for Cambodian bridge construction.

PHNOM PENH: The third ring road in Phnom Penh capital has been named after H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China.
A symbolic inauguration ceremony for naming the third ring road as “Xi Jinping Boulevard” took place under the presidency of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet and Chinese Ambassador H.E. Wang Wentian, following their farewell meeting here at the Peace Palace on the afternoon of May 28.

The third ring road of 53 kilometres long and 22 metres wide, connecting National Road (NR) No. 4 in Sangkat Chaom Chao 3, Khan Pursenchey, Phnom Penh, to NR1 in Dei Ith commune, Kean Svay district, plays a key role in easing cross-border transport, promoting international trade and turning the surrounding areas into a development zone.

This boulevard is a testament to the long history of Cambodia-China relations which have grown to an unbreakable level.

So far, China has helped build nearly 4,000 kilometres of roads in Cambodia.

A country of opportunities and a high-growth economy figure, Cambodia is now attracting investors from anywhere around the globe.

These opportunities should not be looked over by the risk-taking investor in a variety of industries. Still, the south coast offers additional options to investors interested in entertainment, real estate, and business hubs.

Koh Kong

Koh Kong province has attracted major investment projects such as Dara Sakor Airport, a deep sea port, National Road 48, and National Road 10, among other development projects.

Dara Sakor, a Sino-Cambodian port development project, is located in the province. The project is expected to cover 45,000 hectares and includes casinos, golf courses, and resorts. A 20-kilometer stretch of coastline will be transformed into a deep-water port for cruise ships and freight. Near the port, an airfield with a 3,400-metre runway is too long for commercial flights, and its turning bays are too small for civilian aircraft.

Kampot

Kampot is one of the 25 provincial capitals in Cambodia, bordering Kampong Speu and Sihanoukville to the east, Takeo to the east, Kep to the south, Sihanoukville to the west, and the Gulf of Thailand to the west. It covers a total area of 4,873.2 km2. There are 9 cities, districts, 93 communes, Sangkat, and 491 villages, with 23 of them being forest, mountain, or seaside.

Many large projects are currently underway or in the planning stages, such as a new International Multi-Purpose Logistics and Port.

The project located in the center of Kampot’s southwestern province is expected to cost $1.5 billion and will be built on 600 hectares of land with a depth of 15 meters to accommodate vessels weighing up to 100,000 tons. The project will be implemented in three phases, with the first beginning operations in 2025. The seaport’s total handling capacity will be 300,000 TEU in 2025, increasing to 600,000 TEU by 2030.

Kep

Highway 33 runs from Kampot town to Kampong Trach District and then to the Vietnamese border, traversing the province from west to east. The No 33A lane of the No 33 detours at the Kep White Horse Monument in Damnak Chang’aeur District, running along the coast before rejoining the No 33 3 km (2 mi) to the east.

Kep province’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, fishing, tourism, and salt production. In 2008, agriculture employed 92% of the province’s population (75% of whom were rice farmers).

There were ten registered guest houses that year. In 2013 there were 16 main hotels enlisted by the Department of Tourism and 65 by the local Tourist Association according to www.visitkep.com.

Kep Expo is a government-sponsored initiative to promote Kep province as a tourist and development destination, as well as its artists, production, and environmental protection.

Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is located in southwestern Cambodia, near the coast, 230 kilometers from Phnom Penh via National Road 4 and 260 kilometers via National Road 3, and is home to the Kang Keng International Airport, International Water Port, and Expressway. The distance between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville is 187.5 kilometers.

The province has a population of about 310,000 people, according to the 2019 census data. Agriculture employs 23.60% of the population, handicrafts 1.80%, and services 74.60%. The annual per capita income rate is US $ 4,18, and the province’s economic growth rate is 6.8%, which will reduce the province’s poverty rate to 1.86% by 2022.

Sihanoukville is a province with significant economic sectors such as industry, trade, tourism, and agriculture, all of which are priority sectors for the Royal Government’s national economic development. Deep Sea Port, 11 SEZs (3 operational and 8 planned), Sihanoukville International Airport, and beautiful beaches nicknamed “Southwest Star” are among the potentials.

Between 2018 and 2022, Sihanoukville Province received 1,588 investment applications in the construction sector, with a total construction area of 14,644,190 square meters and a total investment capital of $ 7,9 billion.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia has appealed to Japan to expedite a feasibility study for transforming the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (PAS) into a major regional port and logistics hub by 2050. This upgrade aims to fuel Cambodia’s economic growth.

The request came during a meeting in Tokyo between H.E. Sun Chanthol, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), and H.E. Saito Tetsuo, Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism. H.E. Tuy Ry, Cambodia’s Ambassador to Japan, also accompanied the Deputy Prime Minister.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed gratitude for Japan’s longstanding support for Cambodia’s development. This includes contributions to infrastructure projects like National Road No. 5, the Choeung Ek sewage treatment plant, and the ongoing expansion of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (phase 2).

During his two-day visit to Japan (May 23-24), H.E. Sun Chanthol also met with Mr. Tsuyoshi Hasebe, President of Nikkei Inc. He encouraged increased Japanese investment in Cambodia’s electronics, automotive, and technology sectors. This focus on attracting investment aligns with Cambodia’s goal of transitioning from a labor-intensive to a skill-based economy.
