Cambodia, France to re-examine the Tramway project

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Public Works and Transport requested last year that the French Development Agency (AFD) review the feasibility study for a tramway project in Phnom Penh to ease traffic congestion in the capital.

The Cambodian and French sides held a discussion again this year to discuss a variety of important issues, including the Tramway project.

On January 24, 2022, H.E. Sun Chanthol, of Public Works and Transport, welcomed Mr. François Corbin, Representative of the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs for Economic Relations with ASEAN, and his colleagues for a courtesy call and discussion.

In addition to strengthening ties, the Senior Minister and major French companies agreed to conduct a review of the Tramway study project and its feasibility for implementation.

The French delegation was enthusiastic and expressed interest in investing in other projects in Cambodia, such as high-speed railways and wastewater treatment systems, demonstrating their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Cambodia's most recent historic projects include the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway and several major projects under consideration, including the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway project, the Phnom Penh- Expressway project, and the section railway upgrade project in the north of Phnom Penh-Poipet to become a high-speed railway.

Cambodia also committed to other plans, including an infrastructure development plan, a water transport master plan, a rail transport plan, a logistics master plan, and project study, an Automated Train Operating System (AGT), a subway system, and a study of the Monorail Rail Development Project.
