The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has confirmed that the 114-kilometer National Road 71C, connecting Kampong Cham and Tbong Khmum provinces, will be finalized by mid-2024. Construction on this AC/DBST-type road commenced on April 2, 2021.

Currently, the project is in its final stages, including the installation of traffic signs, planting of kilometer markers, and erosion control measures. The road is scheduled for full completion by October 2, 2024, with Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) and Guangzhou Wang An Technical Advisor providing a 24-month maintenance period post-construction.

In addition to National Road 71C, two other national road projects are slated for completion in 2024. National Road 31 will link National Road 3 in Takeo province to the Ton Horn junction in Kampong Trach district, Kampot province.

Meanwhile, National Road 33 will connect Kampong Trach district to Kampot provincial town via Kep province. These roads will serve as vital transportation corridors between Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu, Takeo, and the coastal provinces of Kep and Kampot. Notably, they will also play a crucial role in facilitating freight transport to the Prek Chak International Gate in Kampong Trach district.

These road improvements align with the development of the Funan Techo canal project, which includes several satellite ports, particularly in Angkor Chey, Banteay Meanchey, and a logistics center in Kampong Trach district, Kampot province. The combined infrastructure will enhance the transportation of goods to and from the port.

While these projects are on track for 2024 completion, it’s important to note that new road construction is also planned. For instance, Road 50C, connecting Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Thom provinces, is scheduled to begin construction this year.

On the occasion, both sides shared the same views about close and fruitful bilateral cooperation between Cambodia and Vietnam so far, and reaffirmed to further deepen the cooperation for mutual benefit of both countries.

Taking the opportunity, H.E. SUN Chanthol gave detail information to the Vietnamese side about Funan Techo Canal project with 26 months of feasibility study by 48 senior professors, technical experts and world-class engineers.

The Cambodian DPM also mentioned about the ability to control the quantity and rate of fresh water flow to the sea which has no environmental impact in the country and neighbouring countries. However, once the construction completed, the Funan Techo Canal would balance environmental sustainability and ecological system, establish all kinds of mixed habitats, and prevent floods from Cambodia into Vietnam as well, to name a few, he added.

For his part, H.E. Kunihiko Hirabayashi expressed AJC’s support to the future cooperation with Cambodia. He was convinced that the 7th-mandate Royal Government of Cambodia will attract more and more investment to the country.

On the same day, H.E. SUN Chanthol also met separately with H.E. Hosaka Shin, Vice Minister of International Affairs at Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and H.E. Imamura Masahiro, President of the Japan-Cambodia Parliamentary Friendship Association, to exchange views on future cooperation between CDC and METI and between CDC and the Japan-Cambodia Parliamentary Friendship Association.

H.E. SUN Chanthol requested the Japanese side to attract more Japanese investors to Cambodia through their feasibility study of investment environment with the expansion of production chain and supply chain in the Kingdom, as well as thanked the Government of Japan and her people for their support to the socio-economic development of Cambodia since the 1990s.

H.E. SUN Chanthol and his delegation have been paying a three-day visit in Japan from May 7 to 9 to further encourage more Japanese investors to come to invest in Cambodia.

H.E. Sun Chanthol reassured that the Funan Techo Canal Project provides no negative impact on Cambodian environment and that of neighbouring countries, but it would contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

For his part, Mr. Paul Clements informed H.E. Sun Chanthol about IBC’s mission in Cambodia over the last three decades, and its active participation with the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC), particularly in the Working Group D of the 19th Government-Private Sector Forum.

The IBC chairperson also mentioned about the IBC’s work direction and action plan such as creating opportunities for members of chambers of commerce in Cambodia, such as Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) to discuss and share experience to attract more investment to the Kingdom.
