PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s aviation industry is experiencing a strong comeback! In the first four months of 2024, a whopping 2 million passengers have traveled through the country’s international airports. This is a significant 25% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Currently, Cambodia boasts 31 domestic and foreign airlines operating flights from various destinations, including 8 ASEAN countries, China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Travelers can fly into one of Cambodia’s three international airports: Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH), Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI), and Sihanouk International Airport (KOS).

Last year Cambodia welcomed over 5.1 million air passengers, a remarkable 115% increase from 2022. The future looks even brighter with the upcoming Techo International Airport scheduled to open for business in mid-2025. This new airport, located in Kandal and Tekeo provinces, will further boost Cambodia’s aviation industry.

“These figures are a clear sign that Cambodia’s aviation industry is recovering well from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said H.E. Mao Havannal, Minister in Charge of State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, during a recent visit to the under-construction Techo International Airport.

Cambodia’s famed Angkor Archaeological Park received 421,379 foreign tourists in the same period of the year, earning almost US$20 million from ticket sales, the state-owned Angkor Enterprise said recently.

The figures show an increase by almost 41 percent and 42 percent, respectively compared to last year, the same source added. In April alone, the park attracted 73,845 foreign visitors, making nearly US$3.4 million in revenue from ticket sales. The entrance fee for a one-day visit to the park is US$37, a three-day visit costs US$62, and a week-long visit costs US$72.

The post Cambodia’s Skies See Soaring Passenger Numbers first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia is ready to be a strategic partner of businessmen and investors to seize ASEAN’s viable economic opportunities and is committed to working closely with ASEAN member states and dialogue partners to build a resilient, sustainable and competitive ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) for the common interest of the region.

The remarks were underscored by Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, while presiding over the official opening ceremony of Cambodia-ASEAN Business Summit, held here this morning.

With her strategic location, Cambodia provides a seamless connectivity and creates an ecosystem of collaboration that focuses on mutual benefits and common well-being throughout the region, the Premier said.

At the same time, he continued, Cambodia’s strategic membership in major regional and global trade agreements such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and World Trade Organisation (WTO) makes the Kingdom a highly integrated player in the global market. “Made in Cambodia” products such as clothing and bicycles are now internationally recognised for their quality and competitive prices, which demonstrates Cambodia’s growing presence in the global market.

According to Samdech Thipadei, Cambodia firmly believes that a strong, resilient and integrated ASEAN Economic Community can bring common prosperity to all member states. In this spirit, the Royal Government of Cambodia has been promoting the implementation of the “Plus-One Strategy” by attracting investment in the production of spare parts or semi-finished products to supply large factories in neighbouring ASEAN countries, and has approved the new Investment Law to provide investors with potential and strategic excellence with many incentives for investment projects in key priority areas.

Moreover, he underlined, Cambodia is investing in developing connectivity infrastructure, including highways, deep seaports and international airports, and modern logistic centre, which will promote smooth and efficient regional connectivity to key economic corridors in Cambodia and the ASEAN region as a whole, and these strategic investments will help reduce the logistics costs and increase the efficiency of businesses operating in Cambodia so that they can draw huge potential from the regional market.

The post Cambodia ready to be a strategic partner of businessmen and investors first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH: The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) is experiencing a significant tourism revival, with a 60.5% increase in visitor numbers in 2023 compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to a meeting of the Special GMS Tourism Working Group held on March 19, 2023 Bangkok, Thailand.

Cambodia emerged as a leader in the region’s tourism resurgence, boasting an impressive 82.4% recovery rate. This stands out compared to other GMS members: Laos (71.3%), Thailand (70.5%), Vietnam (70%), and Myanmar (30%). Notably, China’s Yunnan and Guangxi provinces, key tourist sources for the region, are still lagging with a recovery rate of only 3-5%.

Fueled by this positive momentum, the Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s GMS tourism team has drafted the “Greater Mekong Subregion Tourism Strategic Plan 2030.” This plan incorporates research on global tourism trends, regional and ASEAN tourism landscapes, and stakeholder feedback from GMS countries.

The strategic plan aims to realize the GMS tourism vision: “A destination that connects the Mekong River with vibrant culture and people by providing a world-class sustainable tourism experience.” After regional consultations and finalization, the plan will be presented to GMS leaders for approval during a senior officials’ meeting scheduled for August-October 2024.

Cambodia recorded some 540,023 international visitors in January 2024, up 34 percent compared to the same period last year, a report of the Ministry of Tourism showed earlier this month.

Thailand topped the chart among foreign arrivals to the Kingdom with 163,661, followed by Vietnam (85,700) and China (46,781), the source pointed out. Some 206,506 million tourists arrived in Cambodia via international airports, a year-on-year increase of 44.2 percent and the rest via land and waterways, it added.

The Ministry of Tourism has predicted that the Kingdom would welcome 7 million international visitors by 2025, surpassing the pre-COVID-19 pandemic level of 6.6 million in 2019.

The airport construction will finish in October this year as works are proceeding as planned, read the report. “The airport’s official commencement is set for mid-2025,” the same source pointed out.

The report added that the construction of the main infrastructure of the Techo International Airport project was completed as planned.

The construction of terminals is now 58.6 percent completed, power supply centres 76.8 percent, air field related works 64.4 percent and air traffic control tower 100 percent.

The Cambodia Airport Investment has spent a total construction cost of US$961 million.

As a large-scale international airport level/Class 4F, built over 2,600 hectares of land, this airport is divided into three phases of construction – Phase 1 from 2020 to 2030, Phase 2 from 2030 to 2050 and Phase 3 from 2050 onwards.

KTI in the first phase will be capable of handling a maximum of 13 million passengers and 175,000 tonnes of cargo per year.

At the same time, the report stated the rise of Cambodian outbound tourists by 8.1 percent to 155,983. Tourism is a major pillar supporting Cambodia’s economy, in addition to garment export, agriculture, and construction and real estate.

The Ministry of Tourism has predicted that the Kingdom would welcome 7 million international visitors by 2025, surpassing the pre-COVID-19 pandemic level of 6.6 million in 2019.

Cambodia is well known for its world cultural heritage sites, namely the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province, the Preah Vihear Temple and Koh Ker Temple in Preah Vihear province, and the Sambor Prei Kuk Archaeological Site in Kampong Thom province.

Besides, the Kingdom has a 450-kilometre-long pristine coastline stretching across four southwestern provinces of Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep and Koh Kong.

Cambodia attracted some 5.43 million international tourists in 2023, a sharp increase of 139.5 percent from 2.27 million in 2022, earning US$3.08 billion, up 117 percent from the US$1.41 billion recorded in 2022.

The post Foreign tourist arrivals up 34 percent in January first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

Mr. Emmanuel MENANTEAU, regional director of VINCI Airports, mentioned the airport development project during a courtesy call on H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) in Phnom Penh on Feb. 1, according to a CDC’s statement issued on Friday.

“The project on building a new terminal is scheduled to be completed in 2026,” Mr. Emmanuel MENANTEAU said. In the meeting, he also sought a recommendation from the Deputy Prime Minister regarding the airport investment project in Cambodia.

VINCI Airports has approximately 25 years of experience in Cambodia investing in airport projects, including Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, and Sihanoukville International Airport.

The three international airports have handled a total of 4.11 million air passengers in the January-October period of 2023, a year-on-year increase of 144 percent, according to a State Secretariat of Civil Aviation’s report.

The company is a subsidiary of VINCI Group, a leading investor in concession projects covering services such as VINCI Airports, VINCI Highways, VINCI Railways, VINCI Construction, VINCI Transport Infrastructure, and VINCI Energy.

The program, independently verified, has 7 levels of certification: Mapping, Reduction, Optimisation, Neutrality, Transformation, Transition, and level 5. Since the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28), ACI introduced this new level 5 accreditation, awarded at this point to only 10 airports worldwide, among them 4 airports developed and operated by VINCI Airports, the parent company of Cambodia Airports, the concessionaire of the international airports in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville.

The ACA program requires the monitoring of the airport’s carbon footprint and the implementation of actions to reduce the footprint over the years.

To achieve its targets, the airport has invested heavily in highly efficient chiller systems for central air conditioning, replaced all light sources with LED technologies, or reduced the use of diesel ground generators.

The upgrade to level 3 of Phnom Penh International Airport results from associating third parties, such as restaurants, fuel suppliers, and airliners, into the program, further curbing carbon footprint emissions.

On another front, Cambodia Airports has deployed a comprehensive program aiming at waste management, streamlining water consumption, and protecting natural resources and biodiversity. It also includes the building of a waste sorting facility to recover recyclable wastes and separate food waste from the rest, and the replacement of waste bins to promote waste segregation at the source.

Cyril GIROT, CEO of Cambodia Airports, said that being a pioneer and a leader in environmental actions is a key strategy for Cambodia Airports, powered by VINCI Airports and doubling down the ACA program, Phnom Penh Airport has successfully been certified ISO 14001 in December 2023.

“The achievements demonstrate our strong commitment to coping with the challenges of global climate change. I want to express my appreciation to our personnel and partners for actively taking part in these environmental initiatives, contributing to all communities, and making real positive mobility,” Cyrill GIROT said.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s solid growth foundation, existing advantages, and firm aspiration ahead are positive indicators for the country’s development journey.

According to the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Outlook 2024, Cambodia has maintained a steady annual growth rate of around seven percent.

The country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by ten times from US$3.11 billion in 1998 to US$29.60 billion in 2022, and its FDI rose 15 times between 2007 and 2022.

Cambodia is rich in a young workforce with great potential and an important catalyst for the national economy.

The rollout of the Pentagonal Strategy, the national development strategy, is mainstreaming digital knowledge and skills, particularly among the young workforce, and triggering necessary reforms.

Cambodia continues to modernize its physical infrastructure, including international airports, deep-sea ports, land and waterways, as well as logistics systems, to create golden opportunities for investments.

The peace that Cambodia has achieved and maintained also serves as an additional opportunity to expand its free market and green initiatives.

In the years ahead, the Cambodian government aspires to become an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income economy by 2050.

The post Cambodia’s development journey presents golden opportunities for investments first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

A total of 1.86 million foreign tourists arrived in Cambodia via the three international airports, while the rest entered the country through border gates and by waterway, it added.

Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy, in addition to garment, footwear, and travel goods export, agriculture, and construction, and real estate.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the number of international visitors to Cambodia is predicted to reach 7 million by 2025, surpassing the pre-COVID-19 pandemic level of 6.6 million in 2019.
