PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Environment is going to organise a Seedling Promotion and Distribution Exhibition in July in front of the ministry to boost tree planting among the public.

Seedlings will be displayed and distributed for free for citizens to cultivate at home, school, pagoda, public and private places during the exhibition to start from July 10, 2024, under the theme “Green Sprouts,” said the Ministry of Environment in a recent news release.

According to H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, the organisation of this event is in response to the policy programme of the Royal Government of Cambodia, the 7th legislature of the National Assembly led by Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and the implementation of the Environmental Strategy 2023-2028, which focuses on three key angles: clean, green, and sustainable, to meet the needs of Cambodia’s real situation and global environmental trends for the protection, conservation, and preservation of biodiversity and natural resources in protected areas to be effective and sustainable.

This will drive Cambodia towards becoming a carbon-neutral country and achieving 60 percent forest cover by 2050, he underlined.

H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth confirmed that the Ministry of Environment, through all provincial and municipal Departments of Environment, has already planted more than 1 million seedlings of all kinds, ready to distribute, along with tens of thousands more for the Cambodian Green Campaign, which aims to plant at least 1 million seedlings from 2024.

H.E. Minister also promoted reforestation in the degraded areas of protected areas and encouraged all leaders, civil servants, and park rangers to continue striving for better implementation of their roles, responsibilities, and duties by strengthening and expanding cooperation with relevant partners, such as ministries, sub-national administrative institutions, development partners, the private sector, and the local community, for the implementation of environmental sector activities and the Environmental Strategy 2023-2028, especially in natural resource management and biodiversity conservation, to achieve great success for the Royal Government of Cambodia and society.

The post Environment Ministry to hold seedling promotion and distribution exhibition in July first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia and Japan have discussed green investment to make Cambodia cleaner by reducing plastic waste.

The discussion took place here early this week between H.E. Dr, Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, and H.E. Takahashi Fumiaki, President of the Japan-Cambodia Association, and 12 other delegates, all of whom are investors from Japan.

On the occasion, the Cambodian environment minister stated that green investment is mutually beneficial; Japanese investors will receive a return on their investment, while Cambodia will also benefit environmentally.

By recycling materials to replace plastic bags with natural products and by recycling existing resources in the area, the livelihoods of Cambodians can be improved, enabling them to earn extra income in addition to traditional activities such as logging and hunting, he explained.

Simultaneously, he continued, investment that supports the community to have independent ownership and encourages alternative livelihoods, such as fruit crop cultivation, reforestation, and wildlife conservation for tourism purposes, is a positive and sustainable approach to increasing community income. This aligns with the environmental Chakra Strategy, which is consistent with the overarching goals of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

Furthermore, promoting and facilitating green investment with partners such as Japan aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and create opportunities for all investors. This initiative seeks to help Cambodia become free of plastic waste in alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change for Employment Growth, Equity, Efficiency, and Sustainability by 2050.

The post Cambodia, Japan discuss green investment first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Environment welcomes the environment-friendly operation of a Japanese firm, Tromso Co., Ltd., and recommends an investment that will mutually benefit the company and the locals for long-term sustainability.

The Minister of Environment, H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, highlighted the appreciation and suggestion with the President of Tromso, Mr. Masaaki Uesugi, in their meeting on Feb. 28 at the ministry.

According to Mr. Masaaki Uesugi, his firm’s operation, supported by the Japan Forestry Administration, utilizes new technology to produce firewood from husks.

The technology does not only discourage the use of firewood by cutting down trees but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions. H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth appreciated the practice and welcomed the potential investment of the company in Cambodia.

He recommended the firm to optimise the local labour to both offer new livelihood opportunities in the communities it will invest in and sustain the environment-friendly practices for Cambodia as well as the world.

The long-term sustainability of an investment project derives from local community empowerment and ownership, he added.

The post Cambodia welcomes Japan’s environment-friendly investment first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

On the occasion, H.E. Eang Sophalleth supported AgCoTech Australia’s intention, stressing that the investment plan will increase domestic products, improve the local people’s living standard, as well as reduce methane emissions into the atmosphere.

Reduced methane is a major carbon credit under the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change which encourages Cambodia to do carbon business with transparency, accountability, and international standards.

PHNOM PENH: In a diplomatic exchange of goodwill, H.E. Stefan Messerer, the German Ambassador to Cambodia, conveyed Germany’s commitment to the environmental sector in Cambodia during a courtesy meeting with H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of the Environment.

The ambassador emphasized Germany’s dedication to enhancing solid waste management and recycling techniques within the nation.

During their discussion, key initiatives such as Wetland Protection for the Mekong, the Maritime Area Protection Fund, and the Conservation of the Cardamom Mountains Legacy Landscape Fund were highlighted as integral components of Cambodia’s environmental strategy.

Notably, health emerged as a pivotal concern, involving the active participation of multiple government ministries. Ambassador Messerer commended Cambodia’s efforts in solid waste management, particularly applauding the “no plastic bag today” campaign.

He stressed the importance of educating the population about the enduring negative effects of plastic pollution on rivers and waters, which ultimately contribute to unhealthy living environments.

This educational component aligns seamlessly with Cambodia’s solid waste management approach, encapsulated by the three R’s motto: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The ambassador noted that these principles not only bring environmental benefits but also yield economic advantages through resource reuse.

Additionally, Ambassador Messerer shared insights into Germany’s approach to handling organic waste left on streets, which involves separation, drying, and composting. This process results in the conversion of organic waste into nutrient-rich soil, a sustainable solution for waste management.

During their discussion, key initiatives such as Wetland Protection for the Mekong, the Maritime Area Protection Fund, and the Conservation of the Cardamom Mountains Legacy Landscape Fund were highlighted as integral components of Cambodia’s environmental strategy.

Minister Eang Sophalleth outlined his initial priority during the first 100 days. The primary consideration is Solid Waste Management, with an emphasis on involving entire schools in plastic reduction efforts.

This will be complemented by the installation of concrete garbage bins and water fountains in schools to equip children with the means to manage waste effectively and reduce plastic bottle usage. The minister’s ambitious goal is to engage about 3.7 million children in this initiative, which he believes will catalyze a broader shift in how Cambodian society perceives plastic consumption.

In a show of agreement, the ambassador highlights the significance of educating children about responsible waste management. Encouraging children to bring this knowledge home can help transform societal perceptions of waste disposal, ultimately reducing waste at its source.

Lastly, Minister Eang Sophalleth stressed the imperative of establishing a circular economy for the long term. This vision involves harnessing bamboo as a locally abundant resource and combining it with cassava starch to create sustainable alternatives to plastic.

Ambassador Messerer expressed unwavering support for these initiatives, pledging continued technical and financial contributions to the global environment.

It is important to note that the bilateral cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and Cambodia has been instrumental in supporting various initiatives, including the ASEAN Sustainable Solid Waste Management (SCP) project, the One Health project focused on the Tonle Sap Lake, and the sustainable management of natural resources and coastal areas.

Additionally, climate-resilient agriculture and hardwood management have been central to this collaborative effort.

The post Germany pledges support for Cambodia’s environmental initiatives first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.
