Minister of Tourism H.E. Huot Hak met with a senior delegation led by EU Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Igor Driesmans at the ministry on Aug. 11.

Their meeting centered on enhancing sustainable tourism through collaborative initiatives that empower local communities and highlight Cambodia’s natural and cultural assets.

The two sides explored the possibility of developing ecotourism projects that would not only preserve the environment but also provide economic opportunities for rural communities, emphasising the importance of building local capacity to manage these initiatives effectively, and considered strategies to promote Cambodian tourism across EU member states.

The conversation also touched on the potential for establishing direct flight connections between Cambodia and the European Union to broaden accessibility and encourage more European tourists to visit Cambodia.

Minister Huot Hak thanked the EU for the initiatives and spoke highly of the “Our Tonle Sap” project implemented during Ambassador Driesmans’ tenure, focusing on protecting the lake and its surrounding ecosystem.

During the meeting, both parties reached an agreement to jointly promote Cambodian tourism to the people of Jiangsu Province. This initiative aligns with the spirit of the “Cambodia-China Tourism Year 2025.” The Jiangsu Provincial Government committed to close cooperation with Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism in organizing joint events throughout 2025, both in Cambodia and China.

One such event planned is the Cambodia Festival in Jiangsu Province, which aims to showcase Cambodia’s tourism potential and culture. This festival also seeks to attract investors from Jiangsu Province to develop tourism products in Cambodia, with the assurance of protection, incentives, and encouragement from the Royal Government of Cambodia.

The following day, the Ministry of Tourism and Jiangsu Province solidified their commitment by signing six Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) on cooperation in the tourism sector. This signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Tourism Office and was attended by 44 leaders and civil servants from both the Ministry of Tourism and the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Administration.

Furthermore, the officials agreed to collaborate on organizing Familiarization Trips (FAM Trips). These trips will involve inviting prominent media representatives and influencers from Jiangsu Province to visit Cambodia, thereby assisting in the broader promotion of Cambodia’s tourism potential.

“Welcome! The first group of one thousand Chinese tourists organised by China Tourism Group has arrived in the Kingdom of Cambodia on the occasion of the ‘Cambodia-China Tourism Year 2025,’” the Ministry of Tourism announced in a Facebook post on May 23.

The tourism year is a joint activity by the Ministry of Tourism, the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia, and other relevant institutions. It follows the recent state visit of H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, to Cambodia from April 17 to 18, 2025.

The official launch includes a joint performance by Cambodian and Chinese artists at the Chaktomuk Conference Hall on the evening of May 23. Public celebrations will continue on May 24 and 25 in the Techo Meas and Techo Yort garden along the Chaktomuk riverside walking street.

In 2024, Cambodia welcomed 848,952 Chinese visitors, marking a 55 percent increase from the previous year. China is now the third-largest source of international tourists to Cambodia, following Thailand and Vietnam.

A further surge in Chinese tourist arrivals is anticipated in 2025, driven by the strong bilateral ties and Cambodia’s growing appeal as a travel destination. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese tourists topped the country’s tourism arrivals.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia expects to welcome more than 1 million Chinese visitors in 2025.

This includes launching promotional airfare programmes to attract travellers to Cambodia, and co-producing short videos highlighting the Green Season and Muslim-friendly tourism destinations, which will be shared on Qatar Airways’ official platforms.

Qatar Airways resumed daily flight service to Phnom Penh International Airport on Oct. 29, 2023, after suspending operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with an aim to tap into Cambodia’s resurgent tourism sector.

Currently, Qatar Airways operates daily flight service between Doha and Cambodia via Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Thailand topped the list of foreign arrivals to Cambodia during the said period with 1,147,534 visitors, the source added, stressing that Vietnam, China, Lao PDR, the U.S., the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, France, the United Kingdom, and Japan were among the top ten market arrivals in the January-July 2024 period.

Some 1.34 million foreign visitors, or about 36 percent of the total foreign arrivals, arrived in Cambodia by air, a year-on-year increase of 26.4 percent, and the rest via land border gates and waterways, up 21.5 percent, the report continued.

Phnom Penh capital was the most attractive tourism destination for foreign tourists, followed by Siem Reap cultural province and the coastal zone, it underlined.

At the same time, the ministry reported that the number of Cambodia’s outbound tourists rose by 5.9 percent to 1,069,078.

Mr. Thim Sereyvuth, Acting Director of the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Tourism told AKP on Aug. 23 that Siem Reap province is keen to see more tourists as their visits will contribute to the country’s economic growth and local development.

Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy, in addition to garment, footwear, and travel goods exports; agriculture; and the construction and real estate sectors.

Phnom Penh International Airport accounted for the highest number of flights with 356, followed by Siem Reap Angkor International Airport at 103, and Sihanoukville International Airport with 15.

Angkor Archaeological Park, a major tourist attraction, saw a 3.7% increase in foreign ticket sales, generating a revenue of US$814,775.

The Ministry of Tourism is optimistic about the sector’s future, projecting 7 million international visitors by 2025, surpassing the pre-pandemic peak of 6.6 million in 2019.

Cambodia’s tourism appeal is further enhanced by recent accolades, with four of its destinations ranking among Tripadvisor’s top 25 Asia’s best tourist attractions.

Angkor Wat secured the second spot, while Ta Prohm, Bayon Temples, and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum claimed the 19th, 20th, and 22nd positions respectively.

Beyond its historical and cultural sites, Cambodia boasts a stunning 450-kilometer coastline spanning across Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep, and Koh Kong provinces.
