PHNOM PENH: In a remarkable testament to its economic transformation, Cambodia’s rice sector is celebrating a decade of monumental growth, marked by an explosion in milling capacity and a surge in export revenue. On Monday afternoon, June 16, 2025, the Cambodian Rice Federation (CRF) commemorated its 10th anniversary, an event that highlighted a “rice revolution” that has propelled the nation onto the international stage.

The ceremony, presided over by His Excellency Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, was attended by a host of dignitaries, including the Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, and numerous national and international guests.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol recounted the sector’s humble beginnings a decade ago, where a weak private sector lacked a strong, unified voice. His initiative to reform the private sector and establish the CRF proved to be a turning point. This strategic move has since rendered the Cambodian rice sector remarkably efficient, fostering commendable progress across its entire production and value chains.

Over the past ten years, Cambodia has deftly balanced its crucial food security needs with an aggressive expansion of its trade and investment potential. This dual focus has yielded impressive results: in 2024 alone, the nation exported over 651,000 tons of milled rice and more than 5.1 million tons of paddy, generating a staggering total revenue of over US$1.987 billion.

One of the most striking indicators of this revolution is the dramatic increase in processing infrastructure. From fewer than 10 operational rice milling sites a decade ago, Cambodia now boasts over 80 facilities, each equipped with the world’s most advanced technological equipment. This rapid expansion is a direct result of substantial investment, both from domestic and foreign sources, signaling strong confidence in the sector’s trajectory.

These extraordinary achievements are credited to the enduring leadership policies of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister and current President of the Senate, and the continued guidance of Samdech Maha Prasad Hun Manet, the present Prime Minister. Close collaboration among relevant ministries and institutions has further cemented Cambodia’s position as a significant global rice exporter, earning its rice the moniker “White Gold” from the nation’s leaders.

Looking ahead, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol also highlighted the transformative potential of the Funan Techo Canal Project. This ambitious infrastructure initiative, once completed, will become an integral part of Cambodia’s logistics system, significantly streamlining the transportation of goods, including critical rice products, to international markets. This promises to accelerate supply chains and further boost the sector’s export capabilities.

In his concluding remarks, the Deputy Prime Minister extended his gratitude to the leadership of the Cambodian Rice Federation across its four mandates. Their tireless efforts, he emphasized, have been instrumental in leading the institution to sustained success, fostering solidarity, and securing the many achievements that define Cambodia’s burgeoning rice industry.

The country exported 156,789 tonnes of the commodity to 26 countries in the European Union, making US$121 million as revenue, said the report, adding that 75,398 tonnes others were shipped to China, generating a gross revenue of US$47 million.

Exports to 7 ASEAN members hit 74,554 tonnes, worth US$51 million, underlined the news release. Rice varieties Cambodia exported included fragrant rice, white rice, parboiled rice, and organic rice, among others.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom earned US$727 million in revenue from exporting 2.52 million tonnes of paddy rice to neighbouring countries. CRF has set its ambitious goal of exporting a million tonnes of milled rice by 2025.

With the export strategy focused on market expansion, raising production and storage capacity and elevating rice quality standards, the ambitious target of a million-tonne export is attainable, said CRF President Mr. Chan Sokheang.

“Our strategic approach addresses key areas that will propel Cambodia’s rice industry to new heights,” he said.

PHNOM PENH: The state-owned Credit Guarantee Corporation of Cambodia (CGCC), Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF), and Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs) signed an agreement on Rice Export Guarantee Scheme (REGS) which help millers expand their scope to stockpile rice for milling, processing, exporting, and increasing local value-added products.

The signing ceremony was held on May 10 under the presidency of H.E. Ros Seilava, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Economy and Finance with the participation of more than 70 people who are members of the Board of Directors of CGCC, the management and members of CRF, the management and staff of PFIs and CGCC.

The ceremony was held to seal the official cooperation between CGCC, CRF, and PFIs on the Rice Export Guarantee Scheme (REGS), which aims to increase the productivity and competitiveness of Cambodia’s rice industry and boost rice exports in line with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s policy on agriculture.

CGCC launched the US$30 million REGS as a portfolio guarantee scheme, having seven financial institutions participating in this scheme, including AMK Microfinance Institution, Canadia Bank, Foreign Trade Bank of Cambodia (FTB), Maybank (Cambodia), Prince Bank, Sathapana Bank, and Wing Bank. (Cambodia).

Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Ros Seilava said that the launch of the US$30 million REGS project is a reflection of the Royal Government’s strong commitment to support Cambodian rice production and rice exports through the public credit guarantee scheme, of which CGCC is the operator, by providing guarantee coverage of 80 percent on the maximum loan of up to US$3 million.

“The REGS will support the financing need of rice exporters and rice millers to purchase paddy from farmers to produce rice for exports in line with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s policy to increase rice production and exports,” he said.

Mr. Chan Sokheang, President of CRF said the rice credit guarantee package will help millers expand their scope to stockpile rice for milling, processing, exporting, and increasing local value-added products derived from its by-products milling all rice to other sectors such as aquaculture, livestock farming.

According to Mr. Wong Keet Loong, CEO of CGCC, the scheme comes with special features – lower guarantee fees, higher guarantee covers and loan interest rate not exceeding 11 percent p.a.

“We are supporting the aspirations of the Royal Government of Cambodia to export 1 million tonnes of rice by 2025,” Mr. Wang said.

CGCC is a state-owned enterprise under the financial and technical guidance of the Ministry of Economy and Finance with a main mission to provide credit guarantees to improve financial inclusion and support the development of small and medium enterprises.

The post Rice credit guarantee scheme inked to boost rice productivity and export first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

Sixty-one (61) rice varieties, of which 12 from five ASEAN member countries, were summited for the contest, the Cambodian Rice Federation (CRF)’s press release dated Oct. 31 stated.

SKO was recognised by the competition committee as a good and delicious rice variety, said CRF, stressing that with the gold award, SKO will be recognised more widely and have a wider market.

The collective trademark of SKO was officially inaugurated in June 2022 aiming to increase exporters’ confidence and boost the export of milled rice to the global markets.

SKO fragrant rice is popular all over Cambodia, as it provides high yields, is aromatic and of good quality, and is soft and delicious, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.

Cambodia had exported 456,581 tonnes of milled rice in the first nine months of 2023, earning US$327.4 million, CRF pointed out.

Of the figure, 155,366 tonnes were shipped to China during the above-mentioned period, generating a gross revenue of US$99.6 million.

The post SKO collective rice trademark wins Gold award first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.
