PHNOM PENH: As Cambodia solidifies its position as the world’s second-largest producer of raw cashew nuts, the industry is now focusing on boosting domestic consumption and value-added processing.

A key step in this direction was a recent meeting chaired by Her Excellency TOR Pila, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce. Yesterday meeting aimed to promote the use of processed cashew nuts in local markets, including hotels, airlines, and restaurants.

Representatives from various sectors, including civil aviation, tourism, and the cashew industry, attended the meeting. They expressed their support for the government’s efforts to promote cashew nut consumption and implement the National Cashew Policy.

The cashew nut industry has experienced significant growth in Cambodia in recent years, driven by factors such as favorable climate conditions and increased cultivation. However, to fully realize its potential, the industry needs to diversify its markets and increase value-added processing.

Uon Silot, President of the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC), emphasized the need for additional investment to support infrastructure development and promote local processing. He noted that increased local processing can create jobs and reduce reliance on intermediaries.

While Cambodia has achieved significant success in exporting raw cashew nuts, particularly to Vietnam, there is a growing emphasis on developing a domestic market for processed products. This not only adds value to the industry but also contributes to the country’s economic diversification.

Cambodia’s Global Recognition

Cambodia’s rise to the position of the world’s second-largest raw cashew nut producer is a testament to its agricultural prowess. This achievement is a result of various factors, including favorable climate conditions, increased cultivation, and government support for the industry.

By focusing on both domestic consumption and export markets, Cambodia’s cashew nut industry is poised to continue its growth and contribute significantly to the country’s economy.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Cambodia’s raw cashew nut exports witnessed a remarkable surge in the first six months of 2024.

The total export value reached nearly $1 billion, significantly surpassing the annual total for 2023. This impressive figure accounted for approximately one-third of Cambodia’s total agricultural exports, solidifying cashew nuts as the Kingdom’s top agricultural export earner.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia exported US$543 million worth of raw cashew nuts in the first quarter of this year, a year-on-year increase of 13 percent, according to a report of the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia.

The Kingdom exported a total of 424,000 tonnes of the total production of 474,000 tonnes to Vietnam, the source said.

The association’s president Mr. Uon Silot said the commodity’s export increase in value thanks to the growing demand in the international market as some cashew nut producing countries have been affected by unfavorable weather.

“The commodity price will likely continue to increase due to the El Nino impact on some cashew nut producing countries in Asia and Africa,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the Kingdom currently has about 700,000 hectares of cashew plantations in 10 provinces.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has launched the National Cashew Policy 2022-2027, a roadmap focusing on three major strategic goals — production, processing, and exports.

Since the policy launched, local processing cashew nut productions have surged from 5 to 10 percent, according to association’s president.

Cambodia is one of the largest cashew nuts producing countries in the world, but only 10 percent of the commodity are processed domestically.

Cashew is among the Kingdom’s potential cash crops in addition to rice, rubber, cassava, palm oil, bananas, mangoes, longans, and pepper.

The post Cambodia earns $543 million from exports of raw cashew nuts in first three months first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH-December 18, 2023: Cambodian cashew nuts are poised for a boost in popularity, as Japanese companies have expressed their intention to significantly increase imports of the delicious snack.

This news comes from a recent meeting between H.E. Imamura Masahiro, Chairperson of the Japan-Cambodia Parliamentary Friendship Association, and Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet.

The meeting took place in Tokyo on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit, marking the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relations. During the discussions, Mr. Imamura conveyed not only Japan’s interest in importing more Cambodian cashew nuts but also peppercorns. This focus on agricultural products highlights the potential for even stronger economic ties between the two nations.

Mr. Imamura also discussed the ongoing efforts of the Japan-Cambodia Parliamentary Friendship Association and its collaboration with the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Japan. These joint initiatives aim to solidify the relationship between the two countries, particularly in crucial areas like agriculture, healthcare, energy, mining, and UXO clearance.

Expressing his appreciation for the strong bond between Cambodia and Japan, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the significance of the year 2023. It marks not only the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations but also the elevation of their bilateral ties to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Recognizing the importance of maintaining and nurturing this exceptional relationship, Prime Minister Hun Manet reiterated the commitment of the Cambodian government to further strengthen cooperation with Japan in various sectors.

Cambodia exported more than 610,000 tons of raw cashew nuts worth $831 million in the first 10 months of 2023, down nearly 16.7% from the same period in 2022, according to data from the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia.

The average price of dried cashew nuts is $1,658 per ton, according to the Cambodian Cashew Association. For October, dried seeds cost 7,000 to 7,500 riel per kilogram or $1,900 per tonne.
