PHNOM PENH: In a remarkable testament to its economic transformation, Cambodia’s rice sector is celebrating a decade of monumental growth, marked by an explosion in milling capacity and a surge in export revenue. On Monday afternoon, June 16, 2025, the Cambodian Rice Federation (CRF) commemorated its 10th anniversary, an event that highlighted a “rice revolution” that has propelled the nation onto the international stage.

The ceremony, presided over by His Excellency Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, was attended by a host of dignitaries, including the Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, and numerous national and international guests.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol recounted the sector’s humble beginnings a decade ago, where a weak private sector lacked a strong, unified voice. His initiative to reform the private sector and establish the CRF proved to be a turning point. This strategic move has since rendered the Cambodian rice sector remarkably efficient, fostering commendable progress across its entire production and value chains.

Over the past ten years, Cambodia has deftly balanced its crucial food security needs with an aggressive expansion of its trade and investment potential. This dual focus has yielded impressive results: in 2024 alone, the nation exported over 651,000 tons of milled rice and more than 5.1 million tons of paddy, generating a staggering total revenue of over US$1.987 billion.

One of the most striking indicators of this revolution is the dramatic increase in processing infrastructure. From fewer than 10 operational rice milling sites a decade ago, Cambodia now boasts over 80 facilities, each equipped with the world’s most advanced technological equipment. This rapid expansion is a direct result of substantial investment, both from domestic and foreign sources, signaling strong confidence in the sector’s trajectory.

These extraordinary achievements are credited to the enduring leadership policies of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister and current President of the Senate, and the continued guidance of Samdech Maha Prasad Hun Manet, the present Prime Minister. Close collaboration among relevant ministries and institutions has further cemented Cambodia’s position as a significant global rice exporter, earning its rice the moniker “White Gold” from the nation’s leaders.

Looking ahead, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol also highlighted the transformative potential of the Funan Techo Canal Project. This ambitious infrastructure initiative, once completed, will become an integral part of Cambodia’s logistics system, significantly streamlining the transportation of goods, including critical rice products, to international markets. This promises to accelerate supply chains and further boost the sector’s export capabilities.

In his concluding remarks, the Deputy Prime Minister extended his gratitude to the leadership of the Cambodian Rice Federation across its four mandates. Their tireless efforts, he emphasized, have been instrumental in leading the institution to sustained success, fostering solidarity, and securing the many achievements that define Cambodia’s burgeoning rice industry.

In 2024, the Kingdom’s rice exports have demonstrated remarkable growth, with both milled and paddy rice shipments contributing to substantial revenue. Key markets for Cambodian rice include China, European nations, and ASEAN countries.

Cambodia’s rice sector has experienced a remarkable year, with exports soaring to new heights. As of November 2024, the country has generated a substantial US$1.791 billion from the export of both paddy and milled rice, a report from the Cambodia Rice Federation showed this week.

From January to November, Cambodia shipped approximately 575,562 tonnes of milled rice to 67 countries worldwide, raking in US$413 million in revenue.

China emerged as a significant importer, purchasing 109,448 tonnes worth US$69 million. European nations proved to be lucrative markets, with 26 countries importing 283,981 tonnes valued at US$207 million. ASEAN countries, including Timor-Leste, also contributed to the export figures, with a total of 113,792 tonnes shipped.

The exported rice varieties included a range of high-quality options, such as fragrant rice, organic rice, white rice, parboiled rice, and japonica rice. In addition to milled rice, Cambodia exported 4.6 million tonnes of paddy rice during the same period, generating US$1.378 million in revenue.

The Cambodian government has been actively supporting the rice sector through various initiatives, including infrastructure development, technical assistance for farmers, and branding efforts. These measures have significantly contributed to the country’s growing reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality rice.

The pinnacle of Cambodia’s rice industry’s success was achieved in November 2024 when Malys Angkor (Phka Romdoul), a renowned brand for premium aromatic rice, was awarded the prestigious World’s Best Rice 2024 title at the World Rice Conference in Manila, Philippines. This marks the sixth time that Cambodian rice has received this global recognition.

The post Cambodian Rice Continues to Impress on the World Stage first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

This success is attributed to the variety of rice offered, including premium aromatic, fragrant, long-grain white, parboiled, and organic options.

The reach of Cambodian rice has extended to 65 countries and regions worldwide. The European Union remains a significant market, accounting for 228,731 tonnes of exports, valued at $186 million. China and ASEAN countries also play crucial roles, with exports of 81,423 tonnes and 86,043 tonnes, respectively.

Beyond formal exports, Cambodia has engaged in substantial cross-border trade of paddy rice with neighboring countries, amounting to 3.36 million tonnes and generating $1.066 million in revenue.

With its impressive performance, the Cambodia Rice Federation has set an ambitious target of exporting at least one million tonnes of milled rice by 2025. Supported by 3.54 million hectares of rice fields and a yearly yield of 12.49 million tonnes of paddy rice, Cambodia’s rice industry is well-positioned to achieve this goal.

PHNOM PENH: HE Prak David, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, yesterday met with a delegation from Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, China, to discuss potential collaborations in the agricultural sector.

The meeting highlighted China’s keen interest in Cambodia’s agricultural products, particularly high-quality rice. The Chinese delegation expressed a desire to process Cambodian rice for both domestic and international markets.

Secretary of State David emphasized Cambodia’s potential for agricultural exports, such as mangoes, cashews, lentils, and noodles. He stressed the need for investment in processing, packaging, and logistics to enhance the value and competitiveness of these products in the global market.

Both sides discussed opportunities for cooperation in areas like industry, rice warehousing, rice processing capacity, technology exchange, and financial services for the rice industry. The Cambodian-Henan Cooperation Project Plan in the field of rice was a central focus of the discussions.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to exploring ways to strengthen the agricultural partnership between Cambodia and China.

the Cambodia Rice Federation announced this week that the country had exported a total of 412,023 tonnes of milled rice in the first eight months of 2024, earning a revenue of US$305 million. China remained one of the major buyers, importing 77,792 tonnes of Cambodian milled rice during this period.

The positive export figures demonstrate Cambodia’s growing reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality rice to the international market. The ongoing collaboration between Cambodia and China is expected to further boost the country’s agricultural sector and contribute to economic growth.

PHNOM PENH: A recent meeting between Cambodia’s Minister of Commerce and a representative from American rice giant Otis McAllister, Inc. has sparked discussions about exporting Cambodian milled rice to the US.

On June 3rd, Minister Cham Nimul met with Mr. Patrick Murphy, Executive Vice President of Rice and Grains at Otis McAllister, at Raffles Hotel Le Royal. The Minister encouraged Cambodia’s 16 major rice exporters, members of the Cambodia Rice Federation, to work with Otis McAllister to secure deals for supplying the US market.

Mr. Murphy expressed surprise at Cambodia’s positive development and was impressed by the quality and consistent supply of Cambodian milled rice.

Cambodia’s rice industry is already thriving. In the first four months of 2024, the country exported over 248,000 tonnes of milled rice to 60 countries, generating over US$170 million.

The Cambodia Rice Federation has set an ambitious goal to export at least a million tonnes of milled rice by 2025.

Major buyers include the European Union, China, and ASEAN member states. This new development suggests a potential expansion of Cambodia’s rice market into the United States.

The post Cambodia’s Rice Eyes American Market first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.
