PHNOM PENH: The Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) will not set up any fund raising for the Funan Techo Canal project so that no one will take the opportunity to take money from the people.

The announcement was made by Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, at a get-together with more than 5,000 members of the informal economic unions and the academic staff associations on the occasion of the 138th Anniversary of International Labour Day (May 1), held here at the Chroy Changvar International Convention and Exhibition Centre this morning.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet thanked all the Cambodian people, both inside and outside the country, for their messages of support for the Funan Techo Canal Project, which will greatly benefit the Cambodian economy.

Spiritual support is a huge support and the RGC does not need funds from its citizens, said the Premier, adding that even though there is no funding from foreign investors, the RGC had set aside a budget to build the Funan Techo Canal.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also reaffirmed his commitment to continue the mission of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister, to make the Funan Techo Canal project a reality and guaranteed responsibility if there is any negative impact from the canal.

Funan Techo Canal project is not for the benefit of the “Hun” family, but for the benefit of all Cambodians, stressed the Prime Minister, calling on the exiled opposition leader, Mr. Sam Rainsy, to uphold the national interest, and not to oppose just to oppose.

The Funan Techo Canal Project aims to connect waterways between rivers to the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. The canal construction project is estimated to cost some US$1.7 billion.

China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) has been given the right to build the canal, which is expected to break ground for construction at the end of 2024.

With a total length of 180 kilometres, the canal will connect Prek Takeo of the Mekong River to the Prek Ta Ek and Prek Ta Hing of the Bassac River. It will then proceed to Kep province through Kandal, Takeo and Kampot provinces.

Ministry of Public Works and Transport has recently said that the waterway project to cut down the pressure of heavy road transport. The project would give impetus to internal integration, apart from solidifying and expanding regional as well as international connectivity through transport.

It will help ensure that transport by water, sea and port will be easier, less cumbersome and more efficient.

Cambodian people from all walks of life have fully supported the Funan Techo Canal project, recognising its great benefits to the country’s socio-economic development.

PHNOM PENH: Following the recent inauguration of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, Cambodia is preparing to begin construction on a new high-speed infrastructure project to adapt to the country’s growing transportation and logistical demands.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodian prime minster announced on December 22 in Sihanoukville, at the opening of Road 146B connecting to Street 148, that Cambodia would build high-speed railways to connect its capital Phnom Penh with Sihanoukville and Sihanoukville with Thailand.

Prime Minister further stated that because Cambodia already has a railway, building high-speed rail does not require much time. He continued by saying that Cambodia needs internal connections to lessen hardships, eradicate poverty, and raise living standards for its citizens.

At the same time, he reaffirmed that the priority project also includes road projects from Battambang to Siem Reap and Kampong Chhnang to Kampong Thom. The development of the country’s railways is still necessary even though they cannot fully meet Cambodia’s economic needs.

The railway in Cambodia is currently unable to run at high speeds within just 1 meter due to the width not complying with current international standards; in order to comply with international standards and run at a high speed, the railway must be expanded to 1,435 meters.

The average speed of Cambodia’s railroads is 60 kilometers per hour. Separately, it is possible to run 90 kilometers per hour from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction has approved 1,679 construction projects across the country totaling approximately 2.2 million square meters, representing an investment of approximately $952 million in the first five months of 2022. According to a recent publication,

According to the report, investment in the first five months of 2022 fell by about 60% compared to the same period last year, when the Ministry approved 1,879 projects totaling 5.6 million square meters and worth more than $ 2.35 billion.

Although construction investment fell in comparison to the same period last year, the overall construction sector is expected to recover by 3% in 2022 due to increased lending. The construction industry has expanded, while the Royal Government has been monitoring and implementing timely intervention policies to mitigate potential risks.

Furthermore, due to the expected recovery of foreign investment flows for construction for tourism and trade, Cambodia’s construction sector is expected to continue to recover at 7.2 percent in 2023. This is according to Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodia’s Prime Minister, in his circular on the preparation of the draft finance law for the year 2023.

Simultaneously, low- and medium-cost housing construction is expected to maintain good growth due to an increase in people’s actual demand to organize families in line with the trend of increasing domestic investment.

Real estate experts, real estate sales are beginning to pick up, and foreign investors are beginning to make inroads following the country’s opening and economic recovery. These are the factors that will lead to a recovery in the construction and real estate sectors in 2023.

The post Construction investment reaches $952 million in the first 5 months first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.
