National Road No. 48 construction delayed, 10-month extension requested

PHNOM PENH: An inter-ministerial delegation inspected the quality and progress of the construction of National Road No. 48 on August 31, 2023. The delegation found that the project was behind schedule, with only 35% of the work completed.

The delay is due to a number of factors, including geographical challenges, climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and changes in the scope of work.

The construction company, ILSUNG & HANIL Joint Venture, has requested a 10-month extension to the completion date, from April 2024 to April 2025. The Secretary of State for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has agreed to consider the request but has urged the company to complete the work as quickly as possible.

The delegation also inspected the possibility of upgrading the remaining 7.8 kilometers of National Road 48 from the base of Koh Kong Bridge to the Cham Yeam-Klong Yai International Border Gate. The delegation is considering a number of options, including widening the road, improving the drainage system, and adding lighting.

The construction of National Road No. 48 is a major infrastructure project that is expected to boost economic development in Koh Kong province. The road will improve connectivity between Koh Kong and other parts of Cambodia and will make it easier for businesses to transport goods and services.

The delegation is committed to ensuring that the project is completed on time and within budget. The Secretary of State has instructed the construction company to work closely with the technical consultants to develop a revised plan that takes into account the delays.

The delegation will continue to monitor the progress of the project and will take any necessary action to ensure that it is completed successfully.
