PHNOM PENH: A delegation of 38 Japanese firms, led by Mr. Wakabayashi Kohei, Chief Representative of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) in Cambodia, recently concluded a visit to Cambodia, demonstrating the increasing attraction of the Kingdom’s investment landscape.
H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), welcomed the delegation on March 5th, providing a comprehensive overview of the nation’s burgeoning economic opportunities.

The delegation’s visit underscores the rising interest from Japanese businesses in Cambodia’s strategic potential. H.E. Sun Chanthol emphasized the Royal Government of Cambodia’s clear vision for economic diversification, aiming for high-income status by 2050.
He highlighted key factors contributing to Cambodia’s growing appeal, including its strategic location, political stability, abundant renewable energy sources, a dynamic young workforce, and robust government support for private sector investment. This support is manifested in preferential investment laws and a well-developed intermodal transport and logistics infrastructure.

The Deputy Prime Minister specifically guided the delegation towards priority investment sectors, including manufacturing, infrastructure, agriculture, green energy, education, special economic zones, SMEs, and services, showcasing the breadth of opportunities available.
The enthusiastic response from the Japanese delegation indicated a strong confidence in Cambodia’s progress. They expressed appreciation for the CDC’s efforts in facilitating and supporting investors, noting that the insights gained will significantly bolster future Japanese investments.
This growing interest is reflected in existing investment figures, with Japan having invested approximately US$2.9 billion across 149 projects in Cambodia. These investments span diverse sectors, including shopping malls, automobile assembly plants, and healthcare facilities, illustrating the deepening economic ties between the two nations.
The delegation’s positive reception and clear interest signal a continued upward trend in Japanese investment, solidifying Cambodia’s position as an increasingly attractive destination for Japanese businesses.
