Cambodia, World Bank to continue environment cooperation

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Environment and the World Bank (WB) has pledged to continue cooperation on solid waste and plastic management in Cambodia.

The pledge was made in a meeting between H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, and Mrs. Maryam Salim, WB Country Manager for Cambodia, on Oct. 3.

As part of the effort, Mrs. Maryam Salim informed the ministry about the WB’s project on solid waste and plastic management in Cambodia that will last for six years.

She added that it is implemented in five provinces, including Siem Reap, Battambang, Kandal, Kampong Speu, and Preah Sihanouk.

Under the project, landfills with the capacity to store more than three million cubic meters of solid waste will be established.

The implementation of the project will reduce more than four million tonnes of greenhouse gases and extract resources from waste and plastics by reducing the amount of waste in the field from 5 to 15 percent.
