PHNOM PENH: Four private companies have requested a study on the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap expressway, while the Ministry of Transportation is negotiating the construction of the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway for nearly $1.7 billion.

H.E. Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport in Cambodia, announced on November 29, 2022, at the inauguration ceremony of the electric vehicle charging station and handover ceremony at the Ministry of Public Works that four requests had been made to the Ministry of Public Works to study the expressway from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap.

Dr. Ky Sereyvath, director of the Center for Chinese Studies and an economist at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, stated in an interview that he believes Cambodia should have more such expressways, particularly highways to border provinces, Cambodia-Vietnam, Cambodia-Thailand, and Cambodia-Laos, to make it easier and cheaper to transport agricultural products and goods from factories to international markets.

Cambodia recently opened the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, the country's first 168-kilometer expressway, which is approximately a $ 2 billion investment.

The construction of the second expressway from Phnom Penh to Bavet city, which is 138 kilometers long, is currently estimated to cost $1,700 million, with the project set to open in mid-2023.

H.E. Sun Chanthol also stated that, while the results have not yet been finalized with the Ministry, he believes that in the future, we will have another expressway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, similar to the one between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville.
