PHNOM PENH: Cambodia earned US$6.14 billion from the export of garments, footwear, and travel products (GFT) during the first five months of 2025, marking a 23.5 percent increase compared to US$4.97 billion in the same period last year, pointed out a report from the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) under the Ministry of Commerce.

The report indicated that garment and textile exports totaled US$4.46 billion, up more than 23 percent from US$3.63 billion in the same period of 2024.

Footwear exports reached US$836 million, an increase of nearly 7 percent, while travel goods exports were valued at US$842 million, also up by around 7 percent.

The sector currently includes approximately 1,608 factories and employs around 913,000 workers, the majority of whom are women, according to the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, cited recently by H.E. Heng Sour, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training.

“The industry not only provides income to workers but also contributes significantly to the national economy. It continues to serve as a strong backbone of Cambodia’s economic growth,” he said.

However, the sector is also facing challenges due to rising global trade barriers, particularly the imposition of tariffs by the United States.

H.E. Penn Sovicheat, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, said Cambodia is actively working to diversify its export markets to support the sustainable development of its manufacturing base.

“The U.S. remains Cambodia’s largest export market, but at the same time, we are expanding into other markets, including regional partners within the RCEP bloc,” he stated.

In 2024, Cambodia exported GFT products worth US$13.92 billion, representing a 23 percent increase over the previous year, according to Ministry of Commerce data.

The post Cambodia Exports Over US$6 Billion in GFT Goods in First Five Months first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

Cambodia exported some US$21 billion worth of goods to foreign markets, up 4 percent compared to the same period last year, it added.

The U.S., Vietnam, China, and Japan are the Kingdom’s biggest markets with exports of US$8.1 billion, US$2.6 billion, US$1.3 billion, and US$1 billion, respectively.

Ministry of Commerce remains committed to further efforts to boost trade, said H.E. Mrs. Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce.

“The Ministry of Commerce continues to deepen the reform and improve the quality of the ministry’s public service delivery through automation system, reduction of both costs and time, maintenance of price stability and promotion of domestic trade, market development, and private sector development,” she said at the ministry’s recapitulative meeting to review its work achievements in 2023 and set forth new goals in 2024, held here on Dec. 21.

Cambodia’s main products exported are garments, machinery and electrical equipment, footwear products, leather goods, grain, furniture, rubber, fruits, vegetables, pearls, toys, and textiles.

Cambodia’s total imports came down by six percent to about US$22 billion, read the report.

The country primarily imports raw and construction materials, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, electronic equipment, fertilisers and pesticides.

The post Cambodia’s international trade reaches to $43 billion in first 11 months first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Commerce has proudly launched the 16th Cambodian & Import-Export Goods Exhibition, a four-day event held at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh from December 15-18, 2023. This annual trade extravaganza aims to champion local producers, ignite international trade ties, and ultimately boost Cambodia’s economic engine.

This year’s expo features 136 local producers showcasing their potential across various sectors. Renowned Geographical Indication (GI) products like Kampot pepper, Kampong Speu palm sugar, Koh Trong pomelo, and Mondulkiri wild honey take center stage, alongside exquisite handicrafts.

As Acting Minister of Commerce H.E. Kem Sithan aptly stated, “This trade exhibition not only showcases products but provides opportunities for Cambodian businessmen and foreigners to meet and discuss trade and investment in Cambodia.”

The expo’s international appeal is evident with participation from 17 countries, including Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, China, South Korea, India, and many more. This diverse representation paves the way for lucrative partnerships and expanded market access for Cambodian businesses.

The Ministry of Commerce goes beyond product displays, enriching the expo experience with compelling accompanying events. These include trade promotion seminars, business and investment forums, MOU signing ceremonies, business matching sessions, and even a captivating concert.

Since its inception in 2005, the Cambodian & Import-Export Goods Exhibition has catalyzed economic growth and domestic production. It empowers local producers to modernize their practices, refine packaging, and elevate quality and quantity, ultimately enabling them to compete effectively with imported products.

This year’s expo is a testament to the dynamism and potential of Cambodia’s economy. By connecting local talent with global opportunities, the event paves the way for a brighter future for Cambodian businesses and the nation as a whole.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia on Thursday set a new monthly minimum wage for workers in the garment, footwear, and travel goods sector at US$204 for next year, up 2 percent from the current level of US$200, according to the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training.

The announcement came after the National Council for Minimum Wage voted on a minimum wage of about US$202 per month for next year, which was then added by US$2 by the Royal Government of Cambodia.

The council members include representatives of the government, the manufacturers’ group, and the trade union. The new minimum wage will take effect from Jan. 1, 2024, the ministry said.

Besides wages, workers in the garment, footwear, and travel goods sector will also receive other fringe benefits for regular attendance, transportation, rent, and seniority bonuses, the minister said.

The garment, footwear, and travel goods industry is the largest foreign exchange earner for Cambodia. The sector consists of roughly 1,077 factories and branches, employing approximately 800,000 workers, mostly female.

Among them, there are 802 garment factories, 140 shoe factories, and 134 travel goods factories.

The monthly minimum wage for the sector is US$200 in 2023, an increase from US$194 in 2022.

The post Cambodia raises minimum wage for garment factory workers for 2024 first appeared on Estatedia | Economy & Real Estate Media in Cambodia.
