PHNOM PENH: Cambodia has implemented a number of infrastructure development projects in the past 2022 to meet people’s travel needs, notably to support the country’s economic growth, and Cambodia is also focusing on the construction of quality road projects rather than spending to get more roads.
Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony for roads 31 and 33 on December 30, 2022, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, stated that road construction in Cambodia in the past was less expensive. Still, it needed to be longer so that our citizens could afford to travel. However, we are beginning to shift from spending less money to build longer roads to more money to build quality roads.
According to Samdech Techo, as the country’s economy grows, transportation becomes more crowded, with more cars and trucks on the road; as a result, if the road is in poor condition, the quality will not last long. Some Cambodian roads now cost up to a million dollars per kilometer, while others cost more than two million dollars.
The two roads project, which is currently being rehabilitated and upgraded, have a total length of 106 kilometers but cost approximately 120 million US dollars, which is more than 1 million US dollars per kilometer, which is the concessional loan budget of The People’s Republic of China and the contribution budget of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
