PHNOM PENH — National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) Governor H.E. Dr. Chea Serey met with a high-level delegation from the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council on July 21 to explore strategies for expanding American private sector investment and advancing Cambodia’s financial infrastructure.
The delegation, led by Council President and CEO Brian McFeeters, was accompanied by representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh. Conversations centered on deepening bilateral cooperation to maintain financial sector stability and drive long-term, sustainable economic growth.
During the meeting, Dr. Chea Serey emphasized the strategic value of the U.S. as a primary export market and vital economic partner. She noted that American investment plays a pivotal role in creating high-quality jobs, expanding local skill sets, diversifying the economy, and introducing international operational standards to the domestic market.
Dr. Chea Serey also praised ongoing collaboration between the central bank and major U.S. payment service providers. In particular, she pointed to joint work on the Bakong tourism payment initiative—a system designed to streamline transactions for international travelers, support local merchants, and encourage broader domestic use of the Khmer Riel.
In response, McFeeters reiterated the strong interest of American enterprises in expanding their footprint in Cambodia. He stated that U.S. companies are actively looking to partner in high-growth areas, specifically digital finance, human capital development, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
U.S. Embassy officials in attendance commended the NBC for its ongoing regulatory oversight and modernizing efforts, highlighting that a stable banking system and modern payment network remain essential for building investor trust and maintaining a competitive business climate in Cambodia.
