PHNOM PENH: H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said the Ministry is seeking money to rebuild National Road No. 3 to address a 20-kilometer section of road that is causing traffic and transportation problems.
Mr. Sun Chanthol said on March 29, 2022, while inspecting the condition of temporary repair and maintenance of National Road No. 3 (Kampot-Veal Renh) 20 km out of a total length of 54 km, that National Road No. 3 has a total length of 54 km, of which the World Bank has already provided funding to restore 34 km. However, the remaining 20 kilometers of road have several issues, are weak, and have been destroyed for a long time.
He emphasized the technical aspects of making this road sturdy in the dirt area, namely: This 20-kilometer segment is divided into two halves, including: The segment is a 5 km long stretch of earth with a depth of up to 18 meters. To make this portion solid, the foundation pillars must be hit to a depth of 18 meters, while the foundation for the remaining 15-kilometer section must be strengthened and then concreted to make this road sturdy and last.
He went on to say that the Ministry of Public Works has already agreed with CRBC to build this stretch of the road according to the technical requirements, and that the ministry is currently awaiting the budget requested by the Chinese friend in order to construct the road technically.
He said that in order to tackle the problem of this 20-kilometer route in the future, “the Ministry is working to identify a source of funding to rebuild this road in order to facilitate people’s traffic and smooth transportation.” “Until the Ministry obtains the funds for the technical building of this road, it can be used for a long period,” says the statement.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, the Senior Minister appealed to residents and road users, particularly those on this section of road, to show patience and refrain from overloading the road. The legal weight limit worsens the situation on the road.
