MPWT Reviews EV Policy Progress

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) reviewed on Feb. 3 progress in implementing its national electric vehicle (EV) policy to ensure that the EV sector contributes to sustainable transport and environmental goals outlined in the national policy.

The meeting was chaired by H.E. Peng Ponea, Minister of MPWT and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee, and attended by senior ministry officials, representatives from relevant ministries and institutions, and government officials.

The meeting focused on monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the National Policy on the Development of the Electric Vehicle Sector 2024-2030, based on progress reports and implementation plans submitted by relevant ministries and institutions.

Participants also discussed challenges and opportunities arising during implementation, as well as possible solutions to ensure smoother execution of the policy.

In addition, the committee outlined priorities and directions for the next six months to further strengthen the effective rollout of the policy’s action plan.
H.E. Phan Rim, Spokesperson for the MPWT, said the development of EVs is a rapidly expanding global trend, with Cambodia beginning to see steady growth in EV registrations.

“EVs are vehicles powered by electric motors and use batteries for energy storage,” he said, noting that EVs are generally classified into three categories: battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

As of 2025, a total of 12,968 EVs have been registered nationwide, including 9,065 electric cars, 700 electric tricycles, and 3,203 electric motorcycles.
