In the far northeast of Cambodia lies its largest, yet most sparsely populated province. This is Mondulkiri—a rugged frontier of forested hills, hidden gold, and deep-rooted traditions.
Stretching across a vast landscape bordering Vietnam, it is a world away from the bustling streets of Phnom Penh. Mondulkiri is a cultural mosaic. While the population is small, its identity is mighty.
More than 80% of the residents belong to tribal minorities, predominantly the Phnong people. Within their traditional homes, history is kept in clay and bronze. You’ll find gongs and rice-wine jars—some over a thousand years old—which remain the most valuable spiritual and material possessions of the community.
