Minister of Information Emphasizes Combating Fake News to Attract Tourists

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s Ministry of Information recently emphasized the importance of promoting tourism to attract both domestic and international visitors. Minister of Information, H.E. Neth Pheaktra, spoke at a ceremony titled “Promoting Tourism and Countering Fake News” held on January 15, 2025.

According to a Cambodian news report published on infomration.gov.kh, Minister Pheaktra highlighted the significance of promoting tourism alongside combating the spread of misinformation. This dual approach aims to showcase Cambodia’s tourism potential and support the country’s goal of becoming a welcoming, diverse, and secure tourist destination.

The Minister also addressed the challenges posed by fake news, particularly on platforms like Facebook and TikTok. He emphasized the negative impact this misinformation can have on various sectors, including tourism.

Minister Pheaktra stressed the importance of promoting tourism due to its role as a cornerstone of Cambodia’s economic growth. He pointed out the interconnectedness of information dissemination across different sectors. Accurate and trustworthy information is essential for promoting Cambodia’s various industries, with tourism being particularly reliant on a strong information sector.

“Providing tourists and potential visitors with reliable and accurate information fosters trust,” Minister Pheaktra explained. “People travel for leisure and enjoyment, seeking experiences that enhance their lives after periods of work and stress. If a destination appears unsafe or lacks clear information about things to see and do, tourists are less likely to choose it.”

The ceremony, held at the Ministry of Information, brought together leaders from the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Tourism, and approximately 200 representatives from Cambodian media organizations.

This collaborative effort aims to effectively promote Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and safe tourist destinations, ultimately revitalizing the country’s tourism sector.
