Japanese Investor Confidence Boosts Bilateral Trade Toward Record Year

PHNOM PENH — Growing confidence among Japanese investors is driving Cambodia’s bilateral trade to unprecedented levels, with total trade volume reaching nearly $2 billion in the first eight months of 2026 and setting the stage for a potential record-breaking year.

Data from the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia shows bilateral trade surged 18.7% year-over-year from January through August. High-profile investments—such as the expanding footprint of retail giant AEON Mall and a growing cluster of high-tech manufacturing plants—have created a strong foundation for sustained cross-border commerce.

Driven by strong demand for Cambodian-made goods, exports to Japan climbed 22.2% to reach $1.26 billion. Japan remains a critical destination for Cambodian electronics, garments, textiles, auto spare parts, and agricultural commodities. Meanwhile, Japanese exports to Cambodia rose 6.4% to $717 million, supplying local markets and expanding factories with essential machinery, motor vehicles, electronic equipment, and consumer products.

According the AKP interviews, economists at the Royal Academy of Cambodia noted that the business environment in the Kingdom continues to attract Japanese capital, particularly in manufacturing and retail. These investments are actively fueling production capacity and deepening economic integration between the two countries.

This year’s accelerated growth follows an equally strong performance in 2025, when total trade expanded 17.14% to exceed $2.53 billion—including $1.57 billion in Cambodian exports and $956 million in imports from Japan. With investor optimism high and trade momentum picking up speed, total trade volume for 2026 is on track to surpass last year’s historical high.
