Japanese Ambassador Commends Cambodia’s Efforts to Combat Online Scams

PHNOM PENH: Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Ueno Atsushi has praised Cambodia’s strong commitment and efforts in combating online scams, describing the issue as a global challenge.

“Japan highly appreciates Cambodia’s commitment and efforts against online scams, which are a global problem,” the Ambassador said during the inauguration of a water treatment plant in Svay Rieng province and the groundbreaking ceremony for water infrastructure expansion across five provinces.

For his part, Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet emphasised that online scams are not only a national issue but also a regional concern, requiring continued and strengthened efforts from Cambodian authorities.

“This crime is part of national and regional security challenges that Cambodia has been actively addressing, and all relevant authorities must continue to combat it,” he underlined.

The Prime Minister also highlighted that the Royal Government has recently approved a draft law on combating online scams, aimed at strengthening prevention and enforcement measures.

Cambodia has deported more than 30,000 suspected foreign scammers, while over 210,000 others have voluntarily left the country following intensified crackdowns since June last year.
