PHNOM PENH: The inauguration of National Road No. 5 will be in November 2023 under the high presidency of His Excellency Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, marks a pivotal moment in Cambodia’s history. This remarkable achievement stands as a beacon of hope and progress, paving the way for a brighter future for all Cambodians.
On March 26, 2018, the Royal Government of Cambodia embarked on a transformative journey, initiating the project to upgrade National Road No. 5 (ASEAN Highway No. 1). After 55 months of dedicated construction, the project culminated in a resounding success on January 10, 2022.
This remarkable feat of engineering, completed at a cost of approximately US $500 million, stands as a testament to the Royal Government’s unwavering commitment to Cambodia’s infrastructure development and economic growth.
Led by the Tekken-Taiyo JV and Daiho-Asanuma JV subsidiaries, with meticulous inspection by the KEI-OCG-KCI Joint Venture in association with KCEC and TANCONS, the project has transformed National Road No. 5 into a modern, state-of-the-art artery of transportation.
The newly upgraded National Road No. 5, paved with resilient AC concrete, stretches an impressive 366 kilometers, traversing the provinces of Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, and Banteay Meanchey. It seamlessly connects Prek Kdam in Kandal province to Poipet City in Banteay Meanchey province, serving as a vital economic lifeline for the region.
This transformative project has been meticulously divided into three sections: the first section in the north (Battambang-Serey Sophorn), the second section in the south (Prek Kdam-Thla Mam), and the third section in the middle (Thla Mam – Battambang and Serei Sophorn – Poipet).
The significance of National Road No. 5 extends far beyond its physical structure. It represents a cornerstone of the Pentagon Strategy – Phase 1, a comprehensive development plan outlined by the Royal Government of Cambodia for the 7th legislature. This visionary strategy prioritizes “People, Roads, Water, Electricity and Technology,” recognizing the fundamental role of infrastructure in driving economic progress and enhancing the quality of life for all Cambodians.
The impact of National Road No. 5 is already evident, fostering economic growth and facilitating seamless trade. The road has significantly reduced travel time and costs, enabling businesses to expand their reach and connect with new markets. This has translated into increased employment opportunities, improved incomes, and a revitalized economy.
Beyond economic benefits, National Road No. 5 is also a catalyst for social transformation. It has opened up new avenues for development, investment, and tourism, bringing prosperity to communities along its route. Improved accessibility has facilitated access to essential services such as education and healthcare, empowering individuals to reach their full potential.
