Dara Sakor Airport to Begin Domestic Charter Flights This Week

PHNOM PENH: Dara Sakor Airport in Koh Kong province is set to commence domestic charter flights this Thursday, according to a senior official from the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA).

A ceremony presided over by Minister Mao Havannall will mark the occasion. The inaugural flights will be operated by Cambodia Angkor Air, the national flag carrier, using ATR-72 aircraft departing from Phnom Penh International Airport. The aircraft will receive a water salute upon arrival at Dara Sakor.

Developed by Coastal Airport Investment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Chinese firm Tianjin Union Development Group, the first phase of the airport covers 218 hectares and represents an investment of approximately US$200 million.

The airport’s master plan projects a significant increase in passenger and cargo traffic in the coming decades. In the short and medium term, it is expected to handle 7 million passengers and 10,000 tonnes of cargo annually. By 2050, these figures are projected to reach 20 million passengers and 60,000 tonnes of cargo per year.

Cambodia currently operates three international airports: Phnom Penh International Airport, Sihanouk International Airport, and Siem Reap Angkor International Airport.

Cambodia’s three international airports recorded 5.59 million air passenger trips from January to November this year, a year-on-year increase of 22 percent, according to a report from the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA).

The report showed that there were some 52,732 flight movements during the said period, up 14 percent. The cargo shipment also hit a new record high at 70,485 tonnes, up 40 percent compared to the same period last year, the source pointed out.

H.E. Sinn Chanserey Vutha, SSCA Secretary of State and Spokesperson, attributed the growth to several factors, including the easing of travel restrictions and the expansion of air connectivity. “This significant increase reflects the country’s growing popularity as a tourist destination and the expansion of her air connectivity,” he said.

Currently, there are direct flights from eight ASEAN countries, China, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong, China’s Taiwan, India, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to the Kingdom.

Cambodia has three international airports – Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, and Sihanoukville International Airport.
