Cambodia’s Electric Vehicle Adoption Soars

PHNOM PENH: As of August 2024, Cambodia has witnessed a significant uptick in electric vehicle (EV) adoption. The number of registered electric cars, scooters, and three-wheelers has surged to 3,676, a substantial increase from 2,968 units in June.

According to Public Works and Transport Minister H.E. Peng Ponea, this growth aligns with the global trend toward EVs. The minister announced these figures during a workshop on the National EV Development Policy.

The most popular EV brands in Cambodia are China’s BYD, Japan’s Toyota, and the United States’ Tesla. While the number of EVs remains relatively small compared to the country’s overall vehicle fleet (over 7 million), the government’s ambitious target of 30,000 EVs by 2030 under the National Policy indicates a strong commitment to sustainable transportation.
