Cambodia’s Cashew Nut Production Surges 26%, Exports Hit $1.15 Billion

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s cashew nut industry experienced significant growth in 2024, with production exceeding 850,000 tons, a 26% increase compared to the previous year. This surge in production translated into substantial export earnings, reaching $1.15 billion, a 31% year-on-year increase.

Mr. Uon Silot, President of the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC), attributed this success to increased production. Exports totaled 815,000 tons, with Vietnam as the primary market, absorbing 793,453 tons.

The industry comprises 50 processing enterprises, including 6 medium-sized factories with varying production capacities and 44 smaller, family-run operations. Four cashew nut varieties – M-23, M-10, IM-4, and H-09 – are officially recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture.

In 2023, cashew nut exports generated $837 million from 65,600 tons. In 2022, exports reached 670,000 tons, valued at $1.077 billion, with key markets including Vietnam, Japan, and China.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries reported that cashew cultivation in 2024 covered approximately 580,117 hectares, yielding promising results. Kampong Thom province led in cultivation area with 147,700 hectares, followed by Kratie and Ratanakiri provinces.
