Cambodia’s bicycle export bags $330 million

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia exported $331 million worth of bicycles to foreign markets in the first six months of 2023, a year-on-year drop of 30.5 percent, according to a Ministry of Commerce report.

Made-in-Cambodia bicycles were shipped to the European Union, the United States of America, Britain, Canada, Japan, and China, among others, the ministry stated.

Cambodia is one of the top five exporters of bicycles in the world after China, the Netherlands, and Germany.

Bicycle has become the main exported product of Cambodia along with clothes, footwear, travel goods, electronic components, and agricultural products.

H.E. Heng Sokkung, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, said that industrial product diversification is being made as demand and orders of non-garment products have been on the rise.

“The bicycle manufacturing industry made significant export to many countries, particularly to the EU, where our bicycles are popular,” he said.

There are currently five bicycle factories in this Southeast Asian country, all are situated in special economic zones in Svay Rieng province’s Bavet city at the border with Vietnam.
