Cambodian Delegation Visits Bayernhafen Nurnberg to Explore Logistics Investment

PHNOM PENH: A Cambodian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, First Vice President of the CDC (The Council for Development of Cambodia), recently visited Bayernhafen Nurnberg, a major freight transport and logistics hub in Germany.

The visit aimed to learn from Bayernhafen’s experience in managing a large-scale logistics project, particularly its use of waterways and railways for efficient transportation.

The delegation, comprised of representatives from relevant ministries, business associations, and the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, received a warm welcome from Bayernhafen CEO Mr. Ingmar Shellhas. During their visit, they toured the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal and Bayernhafen facilities.

The visit followed a working lunch hosted by Nuremberg’s Vice Mayor, Dr. Andrea Heilmaier. Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol expressed his hope that the trip would strengthen Cambodia-Germany relations, especially in attracting investment and fostering business collaboration. Dr. Heilmaier reaffirmed Germany’s, and specifically Nuremberg’s, commitment to expanding economic ties with Cambodia.

This visit highlights Cambodia’s interest in developing its logistics sector and potentially attracting investment from leading European companies like Bayernhafen Nurnberg.

This focus on logistics aligns with Cambodia’s recently announced $50 billion plan to upgrade the country’s logistics sector over the next 10 years.

The plan, spearheaded by DPM Sun Chanthol, aims to make Cambodia more competitive in the regional logistics market. The plan includes several infrastructure projects, such as the construction of new roads, railways, and ports.

It also has investments in logistics facilities, such as warehouses and distribution centers. Cambodia has already reviewed and prioritized infrastructure projects within the Comprehensive Intermodal Transport and Logistics Master Plan (CIT-MP) for the next decade, estimating a need of US$36.6 billion for these projects alone.
