Cambodia Urges Fisheries Sector Innovation to Elevate Local Products on World Stage

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has issued a call for innovation in the nation’s fisheries sector, urging producers to develop new products and packaging to boost the competitiveness of local goods in international markets.

The appeal was made by H.E. Dith Tina during the Oct. 13 closing ceremony of the CAPFISH-CAPTURE project, an initiative focused on sustainable fisheries development. The minister emphasised the need for a strategic shift beyond traditional methods.

“We must encourage processors to diversify into new areas with strong market potential,” H.E. Dith Tina stated. “This means experimenting with innovative products that feature unique flavours and creative, health-conscious packaging, all while preserving our traditional Khmer tastes and ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and safety.”

The event, held under the theme “Transforming Cambodia Fisheries for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth,” was attended by senior officials, including H.E. Igor Driesmans, the European Union Ambassador to Cambodia, and Mr. Dejene Tezera, Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

Minister Tina commended the project, implemented with support from the EU and UNIDO, for equipping local stakeholders with advanced skills in processing key Cambodian products such as dried fish, fermented fish (Prahok), and fish paste (Pa’ Ork). The training focused on meeting international standards for quality, safety, and hygiene.

He highlighted the project’s success in “linking the private sector to markets, building consumer trust, and maintaining international standards with clear certifications.” He particularly praised its role in fostering “innovative adaptations of Khmer culinary traditions that preserve authentic flavours.”

In his concluding remarks, the minister directly appealed to the Cambodian public to support the sector’s evolution.

“I call on consumers and buyers to increase their support for domestic products,” he emphasised. “This is a crucial factor in encouraging our fisheries producers to be more innovative, to promote Khmer products, and to maintain high-quality, safe, and economically efficient production.”
