Cambodia Takes Another Steps to Strengthen Tourism Industry

PHNOM PENH: On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Council for the Development of Cambodia First Vice President, HE Sun Chanthol, met with a delegation from the Cambodia Tourism Board (CTB) to discuss strategies for enhancing Cambodia’s tourism industry.

Led by CEO HE Ith Vichit, the delegation presented a comprehensive plan outlining opportunities to promote Cambodia as a top tourist destination. The private sector, under the board’s guidance, developed the proposal and sought the Deputy Prime Minister’s input.

A key contributor to the plan was Ms. Lim Sau Hoong, President of SHAOFEN LABS PTE. LTD. from Singapore. Her extensive experience in international tourism promotion provided valuable insights.

Established on June 27, 2024, by Prime Minister Hun Manet, the Cambodia Tourism Board (CTB) comprises representatives from both the public and private sectors. The board aims to foster collaboration between the government and industry to drive tourism growth.

According to a Ministry of Tourism press release, the board will operate as an inclusive platform for public-private partnership, operating on the principles of shared vision, joint action, and accountability.

Cambodia’s tourism industry is experiencing a strong rebound in 2024, with the first half of the year seeing a 22% increase in international arrivals compared to the same period in 2023. This positive trend is according to a recent report by the Ministry of Tourism.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Cambodia’s economy, alongside garment exports, agriculture, and construction. The Ministry is optimistic about the industry’s future, aiming to surpass pre-pandemic levels by 2025. Their projections indicate a potential 7 million international visitors, exceeding the 2019 figure of 6.6 million.
