Cambodia, Japan collaborate to build Special Economic Zone

PHNOM PENH: February 12, 2024: Led by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, Cambodian ministries and institutions convened today to discuss the development of a Cambodia-Japan Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

This initiative, stemming from Prime Minister Hun Manet’s recent visit to Japan, aims to attract more Japanese investment to Cambodia.

Representatives from key ministries, including Mines and Energy, Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, along with the Cambodian Investment Board (CIB) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, participated in the meeting.

Their focus was on formulating a concept document for the SEZ, outlining its structure, objectives, and potential benefits.

This collaboration aligns with Cambodia’s growing trade relationship with Japan. In 2023, Cambodian exports to Japan reached $1.2 billion. The bilateral trade reached nearly $1.8 billion, positioning Japan as Cambodia’s fifth-largest trading partner.
