Cambodia Breaks into UK Market with First Direct Export of Processed Cashew Nuts

PHNOM PENH — In a major milestone for the nation’s agricultural sector, Cambodian processor HCST INVESTMENT CO., LTD. (HCST) has officially begun exporting processed cashew nuts directly to Whitworths, a leading dried fruit, nut, and seed brand in the United Kingdom.

The deal marks a strategic shift for Cambodia as it seeks to move away from exporting low-margin raw agricultural commodities and transition toward high-value, processed products capable of competing in stringent Western markets.

To celebrate the landmark shipment and evaluate export readiness, H.E. Samheng Bora, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce and Chairman of the Export Promotion Task Force (EPTF), led a high-level delegation to Stung Treng province on August 12.

During the visit, officials inspected HCST’s local processing facilities to gain firsthand insight into the enterprise’s supply chain and quality assurance systems.

“This milestone demonstrates the potential of Cambodia’s cashew sector to move beyond raw commodity exports toward higher-value processed products that can compete in demanding international markets,” the Ministry of Commerce noted in a statement following the delegation’s visit.

Meeting the UK market’s rigorous food safety and quality compliance requirements required significant upgrades to HCST’s operational practices. The partnership with Whitworths helped elevate local processing benchmarks, boosting buyer confidence in Cambodian-origin produce.

The initiative received targeted international technical assistance from both the UK Government, delivered via the British Embassy in Cambodia and the UK Trade Partnership (UKTP) programme, and the European Union and Germany through the Export Lab – EU German GATE project. These multilateral programs aim to enhance the technical capacity of local firms, allowing them to scale operations and meet international market criteria.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to supporting local processors, improving export readiness, and creating market linkages across international borders. Officials highlighted that sustained public-private cooperation and international aid remain essential to integrating more Cambodian agricultural goods into global value chains.
