PHNOM PENH — In a major step toward regional digital integration, Cambodia and India have officially launched the first phase of their cross-border QR code payment connectivity.
The new system allows Indian tourists to make seamless retail payments across Cambodia by scanning KHQR codes through their mobile banking apps.
The launch event, held on June 2, was presided over by high-level officials, including H.E. Dr. Chea Serey (Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia), H.E. Mr. Vanlalvawna Bawitlung (Ambassador of India to Cambodia), and Mr. Saswat Kumar Mahapatra (General Manager of the Reserve Bank of India).
The ceremony drew nearly 190 attendees, including representatives from tourism boards, hospitality associations, financial institutions, and local Indian business owners.
Driven by a growing influx of Indian travelers, Phase 1 opens up digital payment access at 4.5 million merchant locations nationwide.
Beyond simplifying transactions for tourists, the initiative—developed through close cooperation with NPCI International Payments Limited and Cambodia’s sponsoring bank—aims to boost trade, investment, and bilateral tourism.
This milestone aligns with Cambodia’s broader strategy to strengthen global economic ties, deepen diplomatic relations with India, and keep both nations at the forefront of the digital financial transformation.
