PHNOM PENH: The Angkor Equinox, a natural phenomenon during which the sun rises directly over the central tower of Angkor Wat, will occur in March, creating a stunning early-morning spectacle for visitors.
The Angkor Equinox takes place twice a year—during the Spring Equinox in March and the Autumnal Equinox in September—when the rising sun aligns perfectly with the central peak of Angkor Wat, producing a breathtaking blend of architecture and astronomy.
According to the Ministry of Tourism on Feb. 25, this year’s Spring Equinox will be observed over three days, from Mar. 21 to 23, 2026.
The equinox sunrise at Angkor Wat attracts hundreds of thousands of domestic and international tourists each year, the Ministry said.
Visitors gather in front of the temple’s western entrance to witness and capture photographs of the remarkable sunrise.
This extraordinary solar alignment reflects the advanced knowledge and precision of Khmer ancestors, demonstrating their ability to integrate astronomical science seamlessly with architectural design. AKP
