2023’s first mega project worth $300 million signed

PHNOM PENH: On January 18, 2023, the Secretary of State for Civil Aviation and Royal Group Koh Rong Development Co, Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Acceptance of the Master Plan for a new International Ecotourism Airport Construction Project.

A new airport is being built on Koh Rong in the Koh Rong Development Zone, Koh Rong City, Sihanoukville Province.  A press release published the same day stated that the project would cost around $300 million and would take 5 years to complete.

Dr. Mao Havannal, Minister in Charge of the Secretariat of State for Civil Aviation, presided over the signing ceremony at the Cambodiana Hotel in Phnom Penh, which was also attended by representatives from relevant departments and officials.

The Cambodian government awarded a concessional contract to the Royal Group, one of the country’s largest investment firms, to develop the island in 2008. The firm has agreed to build an airport on Koh Rong Island as part of the concessional contract.

Koh Rong is Cambodia’s second-largest island and is known for its tranquil beauty.  The island is often described by visitors as an “island paradise,” with pristine white sandy beaches, warm crystal-clear ocean waters, and a hot tropical climate.
