PHNOM PENH: The coastal province of Koh Kong has entered a new era of connectivity with the arrival of the first flight at Dara Sakor International Airport. This historic event marks a significant milestone in Cambodia’s aviation sector.
The inaugural flight, operated by Cambodia Angkor Air, touched down on Thursday, greeted by a ceremonial water salute. The ceremony was attended by H.E. Mao Havannall, Minister in charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, along with representatives from Coastal Airport Investment (CAI), local authorities, and other dignitaries.
According to the AKP’s Press Release, this development signifies a significant step forward for Cambodia’s aviation industry, aligning with the government’s vision for expanding tourism infrastructure and fostering economic growth.
Minister Havannall emphasized the importance of this development, stating that it signifies a significant step forward for Cambodia’s aviation industry. He highlighted the sector’s ongoing progress in infrastructure, human resources, and technology, all of which are contributing to the growth of air travel within the country.
Dara Sakor International Airport, a US$200 million investment by the Chinese firm Tianjin Union Development Group, covers an initial area of 218 hectares with plans for future expansion on an additional 1,000 hectares of land.
The airport is projected to handle 7 million passengers and 10,000 tonnes of cargo annually in the short to medium term, with ambitious targets of 20 million passengers and 60,000 tonnes of cargo per year by 2030-2050.
The opening of Dara Sakor Airport is expected to have a profound impact on Koh Kong province, boosting tourism, economic development, and overall accessibility to this beautiful coastal region.
