$114 Million Project: Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge Set for April 2026 Grand Opening

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge, a vital infrastructure project financed by an approximately US$114 million concession from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, is set to open to the public on April 1, 2026.

H.E. Phan Rim, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, announced today that the bridge itself, located in Kratie province, is nearly finished, with construction completion at 98.36 percent as of early November 2025.

The overall project, which includes the bridge, connecting roads, and related infrastructure, has reached 87.39 percent completion. The construction company is now focused on finalizing essential components such as applying traffic markings, installing lighting poles, and connecting the approach roads to the main structure.

The project, which broke ground on January 2, 2023, is being built by the Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) with technical oversight from Wan’an Guangzhou Technical Consultant.

The bridge spans 1,761 metres long and is 13.5 metres wide, designed to accommodate vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. It stands on 36 piers and includes a navigable section 100 metres wide and 15 metres high for river traffic.

This structure is crucial for enhancing regional connectivity, linking Talous village of Bos Leav commune in Chetr Borei district with Thmar Reap village of Prek Prasop commune in Prek Prasop district.
